Could be a faulty fuel pump.
Water or dirt in the fuel.
Faulty spark plugs.
faulty iginition coil.
Incorrect timing.
Hope this steers you in the right direction.

It's a new carb....did you tune it any or open the box and bolt it on?

Carbs need to be jetted and tweaked for each motor.

As nigel points out could be many things.
What size and type carb did you use? It is possible you got a carb too big for the car?

My first guess is you are running too rich on the carb.
After the bog, does it then pick up?

Does is bog when lower gears?

Changing the filter can never hurt but is probably not needed yet.

the carb is an edelbrock 650cfm and its been adjusted. the hoses and springs(inside the hoses) are also ok so is the timing and have new fuel lines...help help. it bogs when starting in first ,gets smooth up to bout 55-65 (in third or fourth)and it starts to sputter if i accelerate more, if i go back to 3rd it smooths out then to fourth it smoothes out but if i press on the gas it bogs and sputters.

What jets did you put in the primaries and secondaries when you adjusted the carb for you motor? The behavior you are describing sounds like you are getting too much fuel in the lower RPMs which would be consistent IMO with the stock jets on a 650 when strapped to a motor that doesn't need a 650. When you start your car after sitting for a few days do you get black droplets sprayed out your tailpipes?

Hello shommel,
Sounds like a rich mixture. The carb is a bit big but should be OK.

I would try these things:
1. - Check the dwell on the points
2. - Check timing - I would run about 10BTD initial
3. - Spray a quick blast of carb cleaner around the carb base to check for leaks. Not too much, it will eat the paint.
5. - Be sure vac advance is moving/working
6. - Perhaps re-adjust the carb. Set the idle mixture screws in to lean the mixture.

I believe you should be able to straighten this out with fine tune the motor.

The Edelbrock carburetors (years ago made by Carter) are excellent carburetors, but need to be tuned for specific applications. You need to replace the main jets and metering rods. Here’s a link to an exploded view of the carburetor and some aids in selecting jets/rods (don’t let it scare you, they’re simple carbs). It’s very easy to tune these carbs, and if you’re careful you don’t even need to buy gaskets (just jets and rods). The rods can be replaced without even dismantling the carburetor through two little access plates on the top. Just hope that you bought the right version of this carb (the Ford variation), or the emulsion tubes could be wrong, but that's another story ...
