Default Can I just replace rusty areas? (70 coupe)

Looking at picking up a 1970 Mustang coupe, decent condition except for some rust. Mostly on fenders and rear quarter. I am good mechanically but havent done body work to this extent. Would it be possible to just get replacement panels? How hard is it to fit them? What kind of work does this entail?

Hello 99WhiteXJ,
Good Luck on the decision.

I offer a few thoughts as someone who hasn't done too much body work.

On classic Mustangs make sure of the under carriage.
Look for rot on the shock towers, where the firewall meets the frame rail.
Look around back over the tires where the rails are.

The rust you talk about sounds simple.
Fenders can be unbolted and replaced/fixed etc.
They even make rear quarter panels that can be welded in. They also have patch panels that repair sections. These panels can be glued using special glues, then
a little body filler and sanding. The end result can look great.

It depends on how perfect you want the car. Take a look at places like Mustangs Unlimited, Dallas Mustang etc and see what they offer for panels and parts.

Be sure to check under the car as that is where a lot of trouble often lies.

Best of Luck......... Print Dad

The frame is the key, I had to junk my 73 because the frame was gone. Anything else can be fixed.

Thanks for the input so far guys. Im going to look at it again tomorrow so I'll definitely check out everything you mentioned just to be sure. I don't plan on making it a show car/full resto, just nice enough to be a good driver.
