Default 1966 Mustang Dash Color ?

Were the dashes for the early Mustangs painted gloss or semi-gloss. I'm getting ready to redo the dash and will be painting it black....

Hello. They were all semi-gloss, as were all of the other painted metal surfaces in the interior.

Just curious, was black interior paint the same shade of black as the engine compartment?

No - and I think the engine compartment was enamel and the interior paint is all lacquer

Hi again. The interior paints were indeed lacquers, but, the under-hood stuff was the same thing that used on the bottom of the floor pans, the frame rails, etc... It was an epoxy based thing. The interior paint was actually just a bit glossier than the under-hood, but wasn't anything close to being as durable. I saw a car once that was a project car, all rusty and stuff, motor missing, pretty much needed everything. The paint on the shock towers looked like it was ok, though. I started to wipe on it with a wet rag, just to see how it really looked without all of that dirt on it, and I pushed right through. I looked at the back side of the big paint flake and it looked just like the front. The paint was still there trying to hang on after the metal underneath it had rusted away completely.

Glad I saw this thread.
After I get my engine out, hopefully today, and to the machine ship I need to refinish the engine compartment on my 66.

I was not sure if the compartment was black or the same color as the body, since I can see both black and the tan (or whatever they called it) in the compartment.

The black paint has peeled off in large patches in several areas.

So it was a semi gloss, appears to have stopped at the edge of the front fender sheet metal, not sure about where at the cowl.

My car has what I was told is "dealer added" ac and the site glass component (dryer?) was bolted on the car right over the engine compatment data label. This label has 'black' beneath it.

Were engine compartment struts black also?

I'm going to be painting the dash today. As far as under the hood, isn't the under side of the hood painted the body color? My 66 is a repaint from years ago, and the underside of the hood is painted the body color.

Yes it is, mine is the orignal color and looks quite bad!

BTW FORD in those days used enamel on the exterior.

I just came across this in a book I have. May be of some use as far as under hood painting. Also has other info.

66er
That is a very useful chart to have thanks!

What book is this from?

I also have to paint my doors (interior) and dash and am looking for as much info as I can find.

I also have a dash that was cut for modern radio and hope to repair this.

They don't give a code for "medium blue" used on the 66 engine on the chart.

Hi again. Just to make sure everybody's on the same page here, the bottom side of the hood is body color. When I said 'under hood' I was talking about the inner fenders, shock towers and firewall. And yes, the cowl braces that go from the back of the shock towers to the cowl were also that same black. The cowl area was body color and the line between the black and body color beaks where the lip of the cowl is. That line continues all the way across. Here's what that's supposed to look like.

Thanks Veronica, that is how my car looks, aside from the old and the peeling paint.
