Default Need help - Taurus Electric Fan

New to the forum. Hello everyone. I have had my 1968 High Country Special for about 5 years. It is a 302 "J" code, but pulled that in favor of a 351W stoked to 393.

I am looking for anyone that has successfully installed a Taurus fan in their classic mustang. There are a ton of discussions through out the internet on this converstion and the benefits of this fan. It pulls an incredible amount of CFM's, but also draws big amps.

I have a 140 amp alternator, am using a flex a lite variable speed controller, a 40 amp circuit breaker, and 10 gauge wire. I can not get the fan to work for some reason. It keeps blowing the circuit breaker after a few minutes of the fan running.

I have replaced the fan motor and re-wired twice and am about to give up. Has anyone been able to make this application work?

Thanks
David

The older Taurus fans used a dropping resistor. It was a 2" by 4" ceramic block bolted on the transmission. I would try that first. The resistor was for low speed, and current was direct for high speed. It shouldn't be blowing a 40 amp fuse though.

I have one on my dodge truck and will be running one on my mustang soon. I just ordered a 75amp relay and wired it up. There is a low wire and high wire. Make sure not to hook those up together.

Thanks for the responses.

Joker, would you mind answering a couple of questions:

1) Are you using a fuse or circuit breaker between your battery positive connection? If so, what amp

2) Please confirm that you are only connecting the high speed and ground wires on the fan. Low speed is not connected.

3) How have you connected your fan motor wires. Are you using the ford plug in connector, soldering, or crimped butt connectors?

I have resistance somewhere as the fan motor wires are getting very, very hot.

I am using a hayden fan controller with a 75 amp relay. It has been working great now. I did have one issue with it and the wires do get pretty hot. Not sure why but they do.
