Well I guess the M is just there to help differentiate it from a 351W and 351C. I have heard the M stood for "Midland", the plant where it was made, and then I also heard it stood for "Modified", which could make sense because the 351M and 400 engine blocks were a modified design from the Cleveland family.

You asked how to tell an M apart from the other 351's. The 351M looks like a Cleveland except it's deck height is taller. Not sure how much, I think maybe 1 inch taller? The rear of the block where the transmission mounts is the same as for a big block, not other small blocks, so that is another way to tell. Internally, the 351M has bigger journals than a 351C and longer rods.

the deck hieght on the 351m/400 is 10.3 inches or the same as the 429/460. one thuing about the ford v chevy V8 is; the first ford V8 was far superior to the first chevy V8. mull that one over guys.

What and when was the first Chevy V8? I never thought about it, just assumed the W block was their first.

LMAO!!! you are telling me that an engine fist used in 1955 is inferiour than an engine that was last used in 1953? As much as I love the old Ford flathead V8 (I own one!), there is no way that you can convince me that it is superior in design than a small block Chevy. The flathead's valves are in the block and the center 2 cylider share an exhaust port.

Below is a picture of a 1949 Mercury Flathead in a 1940 Ford coupe, with losts of hot rod parts on it

Cool

contrary to popular opinion the 1955 chevy small block was actually the second attempt at a V8 for chevrolet. their first attempt was a misrable excuse of an engine. it was 1917 and chevy wanted something more than the 4 poppers they were working with, so they created a V8. it displaced 288 ci, and developed a whopping 25hp. the four popper made 26hp. the V8 was soooo bad it was dropped 1/2 way through the 1918 model year, and chevy didnt do a V8 again untill the venerable 1955 small block which we all know and love/hate, use your own personal adjective here if you like.

I used to be a pretty solid Chevy girl, but with the newer rides, I am leaning more toward Fords. I have an '86 Firebird, and I really love it, but it is made so cheap, its a shame. Also, it isn't design as thoughtfully as some of the Fords I've seen. I once had to change out the headlights on a 2-degree day, and it took me so long, and I was frozen. There is no excuse for subjecting a car owner to that kind of abuse.

I really love the old MOPARS best, but I can't stand the new Chrysler products. I'm also liking those special design older Fords, like the Boss 302, Boss 351, and 428CJ. Those are some real monsters. For Chevy's, I agree with what someone said about 305's...in spite of what so many Chevy 350 people say, the 305 can be built pretty well. I don't know why, but I like the older 327 Camaros. But that 283 sure as heck was a durable engine. I think for newer cars, Fords seem to have a pretty good product.

because they are so insecure about their cars they feel they have to run down everyone else's cars to make themselves feel good.

GREETINGS from Vienna / AUSTRIA - central Europe !

Think this "friction" between Chevy and Ford owners over there is funny. Having a little Repaishop and working,
restoring, and doing Enginerepair´s on old Us-Cars of any Make (of course most Chevys and Ford´s) I know that some Chevy and Ford Engines are preferred Stuff and others NOT !
I LOVE Chevys 327, and a little less the 350, and Ford`s 351W and C with 2V Heads and could write a book about WHY!
You can tell good and bad things about all of this Engines,
but good built they are the one´s to go with.
I for example - don´t like this heavy Monster-Engines.
Talking bout street aplications they prduce mor heat than
power, affect cars balance, handling, breaking, and so on.
Regardless of Ford or Chevrolet built.
So where´s the basic reason for this Chevy vs. Ford religion`? Can ayone explain ?

THANKS ! And pardon mx bad English !

IMO...I've been a professional service tech for 27 years and one thing I learned long ago is that they all make good ones and they all make bad ones. It's strictly a matter of personal preference. I don't mind talking to a "Chevy guy" as long as they are realistic and open-minded enough to accept that fact. Unfortunately, it seems that the majority of "car nuts" (like us?) don't see it that way. I'm appreciative of any car (except maybe "ricers"...lol) that shows real workmanship. If a Chevy guy or Mopar guy starts spouting off about Fords then it's "game on". Anyone who says that "all Fords (or Chevys, or Mopars) are junk" are just not living in the real world and should be avoided. I've owned Fords, Chevys, Pontiacs, Chrysler, and even a Toyota, but I've always preferred the Fords and always will.
