Does anyone know if there is a way to track the history of a Mustang through its VIN? I'm in the process of buying a 1965 Fastback and would like to find as much of the history as I can, i.e., number of owners, etc.
The Ford records for pre-'67 Mustangs have been destroyed.
I tried to find out about previous owners of my '67 with the VIN and NV Title Number, but the Nevada DMV would not give out any info. I tried to contact the owners listed on the NV title, but they moved after bankruptcy (losing my '67 Convertible, a '67 Mustang Fastback, a '61 Falcon Ranchero and a '68 Ford XL) I haven't looked any further than that. I don't know who owned my car, or where it was, from March 1967 to May 1984.
Maybe a Title Search company could help.
Does the car you are buying have the original door data plate? If yes, it will have the original DSO (District Sales Office). It might be the area to start the Title Search in.
Do you have any old paperwork with the car?

The best thing to do is contact the person you bought it from and work backwards. Very difficult to get info from the DMV these days due to privacy laws. The other problem comes in that some states no longer issue titles to older cars so if the car is from one of these states or spent time in one of these states then tracking it will be difficult/impossible.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project
Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.
I'm picking the car up on Saturday so I'll see if the current owner has any info. about previous owners. I was just curious to see if there was some "easy" way to get the information. I figured it would take a lot of leg work.
I agree with JAY H, the best thing is to work backwards. That's exactly what I did and I found the history of my car to be interesting. The first owner of my car was some lady name Louise when she purchased the car in 1970. The second owner was a guy name Lou from florida. The third owner was named Lou from the midwest. Now I own the car and broke the Lou chain. I thought it was a joke at first, but it was all verified because I contacted all the previous owners out of curiosity. I bet no one else has that kind of history either.
My car started as a 6cyl, but was ripped apart and put back together twice. It sat in a junkyard for many years and then a restoration was started on it, and then I bought the car and am now finishing it. It's been modified and changed very much from the original and I'll be posting pictures of the build to where I am currently with the project. I'm hoping that it'll take another month from now.

65fb, I hope you are getting a title with the car, when you pick it up. Some states won't accept a Bill of Sale as proof of ownership. My state no longer does. A title is the best proof of ownership a seller can offer. Verify the VIN on the title is the same as the one on the car. If not, hang onto your money.
A friend had his '65 Coupe off the road for a number of years while it was being restored. When he went to register it, the DMV wanted a title and sales tax. He said "I paid that back in '65, when I bought it and it has never had a title." Massachusetts never used to require cars to be titled back then. All vehicles are required to be titled now. He went through the run-around and finally got it registered. He has the original paperwork from when he bought it new in 1965.
