Default *LOTS OF PICS* 1966 Mustang Coupe goes from 176cid to 306cid.

Hello all, I am new to this forum, but have been gathering a great deal of help from you alls input. This is a great site. I am putting this little 1966 6cyl coupe to sleep and when she wakes up she will be a big bull dyke mad at the world! j/k Anyways going to replace the straight six with a 68' 302. This will be motor and car and so watch and enjoy, and throw any comments out you think will help.

Thanks.

-Stranko

To start off this is motor progress from when I got it until now

Im not sure what kind of top end I am doing yet. The crank, caps. rods, bearings are all getting assembled tomorrow. I built the bottom end to handle alot more than i will be giving. Im considering gt 40 heads (ported) and a good aluminum dual plane intake, and maybe at most a 650cfm.

Had the block fully machined and tanked and bored, screw in oil plugs, the crank being from 68 just needed polished which was great, rods reconditioned with .30 over pressed on hyperuetectic Speed-pro pistons and matching ring set, clevite bearings, and all ARP hardware. So the bottom end can handle a decent amount of power (400hp maybe 450). It wont have that much though.

man i just love these threads! new life to a old pony
enjoy it! oh and just be ready to open that wallet a couple of times!
so any thought into the tranny and rear end ?
the c4 will be just fine if that's what you have , i would just
have it gone over while you have it out of the car , get the
seals and servo looked at , but that rear end ( 7.25') i would change out to at least an 8" , i'm pretty sure it wont last long
behind a 302 with any real power ,good luck with you build , looking forward to watching

I will be keeping the C4, and freshening it up while I am at it. I will be removing the current 4-lug rear, and supplementing it will a disc break 8.8 out of a 91 explorer. As far as a rear gear I was looking into a 3.55 or 3.73. Do you have and ideas what would be good with a 300hp motor and a C4? hahaha on the wallet, mine just permenantly stays open now for some reason. :o)

either one of those gears will work fine , plus alot of fun
the 91 explorer swap will work well but it has a offset housing. which can cause the drive shaft flange to contact the underside of the car before the axle hits the bump stops. This is by no means an everyday occurrence, but it can and will happen
here is a great read on a guy thats done alot of mods on his 66
some nice info

Better yet on the rear end, I just found out that my buddys dad's 66 T-bird 9 inch will bolt directly into my mustang. This is sick, because that is a 5 lug already so that will take care of the back, and the cool thing is I get a whole 1966 Tbird, orginal 390 FE car, and rear end for 50 dollars!!!!!

Any one know what a stock 1966 t-bird w/ a 390 had for rear end gears? I would imagine something tall to move the big thing around.

Default Motor Assembled

Since the last time, got new shocks on, and had the 302 put together by Huck's Machine shop in Eastgate, or eastside of Cincinnati Ohio. Then started doing the typicals.

I have also redone both brake light full assemblies and both parking lamp full assemblies. Trying to make sure that all of the lights have new wiring and housings.

Here are some new pics.

sfi-approved balancer, it has a nice asthetic look to it on all that blue. I did NOT go with high volume oil pump, my buddy who is a 302 master said there is no need for it. I am running a basic Melling pump, strainer, and oil pump drive shaft. He has been running 572 rear wheel horse with a turbo and standard oil pump for about 3 years now with no problems at all. High volume equals high cost no added performace.

Awesome pics! Nice motor I'm going to tear mine down this winter and I'll try to post start to finish. I think we need more of that.
