Default 1968 Mustang coupe 289 buying/building advice

I'm pretty green with carburated motors, I currently drive a '94 GT, but its too computerized and definately no fun to wrench on. I really want to get into older stuff. I'm going to look a '68 coupe here this weekend to see if its worth my time. It has a 289 with an edelbrock performer intake and a 4 bbl carb, not sure yet what cfm. Its a manual, but I dont know yet if its a 3 or 4 speed. What are some things to look for in the drive train that might suggest I move on? Also, what are some pointers about making this combo tough and streetable. Not looking for a high-horse monster, just a coupe thats a fun weekend warrior/DD. Thinking about going the 331 stroker route, or should I just go with 347? I am planning on going with better heads off the bat, that's usualy a decent gain, and I'm pretty sure its got stock heads on it now. I am going to do an Arning drop on it, and probably some decent headers. Other suggestions or advice?

I'd suggest to you that the body and paint are the most important things to look at. The engine and drivetrain are easy fixes / replacements -- you'll spend real $$ dealing with rust and body work.

The engine and tranny issues are easy to fix rust and crash damage will eat up the bulk of your budget.

Rust rust and rust drive train is easy rust fixing is a pain.Pour water down the cowl vent its the holes right under the windshield if the water comes out in the floor pan walk away.It should run out under the fenders.Take a hammer and knock on the frame rails they rust out from the inside so it can look good but be thin metal. And take a magnet with you and randomly stick it around the rear wheel archs and lower half of the doors.
