Default my experience with water base paint

I live in CA and have to use waterbase paint. Recently tried it on my hood. Used a urethane primer sealer. The water based color coat was irregular so I decided to let it dry, clean , sand and respray. Ouch! the water base surface cleaner final wipe dissoved the color coat upon contact. Tried sanding and that was worse.Did not sand worth a damn. The color coat gummed up and rolled off even after a few days of drying. Lesson: you can't sand or clean wipe the water based color coat. You just wash it off with a water based cleaner final wipe and start over. I guess the clear coat is what seals in the waterbase color coat to protect it from washin off.

Not that I want to try any of it, but what brand were you using?

This is one of the reasons that McDonnell Douglas used to fly their new airplanes form CA to AZ to have them painted.

Yeah good luck with that, I ended up painting my race car with farm tractor paint.

Have not heard good things about it. It is used for base coat and requires a clear coat for protection. And Clearcoat has VOC so really nothing is gained for the enviroment. But it is being pushed through for 2011 as a standard.
Also you should not sand REAL basecoat either. It is ok to nib out junk but never sand. The clear will lift off after a short time.

How did you let the paint dry? I heard the waterbased paints need air movement in order for them to dry properly. If the paint is left to sit, it won't cure.
