Default 197? mustang is this?

I bought this car, the VIN on the door matches the VIN on the
ownership card, however the dash, removed and sitting on the back seat , has a different VIN.
It appears as if the engine MAY me a "77 (I say that because I just pulled this spacer off {fig1} and I was told that they were not used untill '77) the doors & hood a "73
and the dash says "72
I ran Both VIN #'s in question through a Canadian Police auto theft detection web site ,and 2 from the states (car fax and anouther one) and it was clean.
I want to go registar it but just dont know what it is????????
Here are some pics...what do you think '73?

Looks like a 72 Grande but hard to tell. Can you post a picture of the headlights?

The dash is a 71 the small front bumper is a 71/72.If you want the true vin loosen the fender bolts on the driver side and slide the fender out there is a hidden vin under it.I should be in front of the shock tower about half way between it and the radiator support. And btw the cars too old for car fax the vin is too short. When you find the real vin check it and you can decode it here Classic Mustang Dataplate Decoder

Whoever told you about the spacer is full of it. I had the exact same one on my '73.

The bumper looks like it's the same as the 5mph urethane bumpers. It's the same color as the car. Didn't they have chrome bumpers in 71 and early 72?

Need a pic of the front turn signals to tell for sure.

Some of the '71's had the "rubber" bumper too - especially the Sportsroof/Mach1 options

What are the first 5 digits of both VIN's you found? This could eliminate one of them right away.

This car could have parts from all three years for this body style. If the dash is removed and the tag with it, it could be a dash form another car. Find the VIN on the inner fender, if it matches the door and owner card, then that's your VIN.

Did you really check the VIN with CARFAX? That site only works with 17 digit VIN's and it does not have reports on cars built pior to 1981.

Yes there was chrome front bumper in 71/72 the had a rubber bumper mostly on the mach1 one.But you could order a coupe just like a mach1 but for the stickers on the fenders.

I was wrong the front end is a 73 but the passenger side of the dash is 71 but its a old car im sure there's some mix match parts here and there.Do you mean the vin tag on the dash or door plate. The door plate most places sell blank and can stamp it for you.The dash vin i have no clue. But get you a marti report ::Marti Auto Works - 1955 - 1989 Ford Parts it will show how the car was built when it was new.

If you do as andrewmp6 suggested, you will probably find your true VIN. If the drivers side inner fender has been replaced and has no VIN stamping, check in the same area on the passenger side inner fender. You'll have to remove the top fender bolts though, in order to lift it and gently pull it away from the inner fender.

If you find a VIN stamping, you won't have to replace any tags. All you'd have to do is have a DMV or Police Inspector varify the VIN on the inner fender.

Because the drivers door is removable and may be from another car, the chances are that the DMV will not accept the door tag on it as proof of the real VIN.

Unbolting the fender is not that hard, I don't see why you wuold go through all the other steps without doing that one first.

Default 197? mustang

I just got back from DMV.they said......

that to get a new VIN I gotta jumpthrough
several hoops.

Was also told could take it to a certain place where they would strip it down until they find a # on the body and then they would issue me a 2009 VIN for the "rebuilt" vehicle.

could get a letter of afadavid from a lawyer stateing that I am the rightful owner of this "Frankenstein" of 2 vin's and will registar it using the VIN on the dash.(I have but not YET own this actual plate)

I have checked both side fenders......checked rad cradle.......under rear seat....glove box and(without removing engine) attempted to see one on firefall...no #'s....??????????????????????

I would REALLY like to know just what it is that I am driving b4 I registar it
Does it look more like a 73 or 72

What is the difference in body style specs in the 72/73 ?
longer shorter fatter thinner?????????????????????
thankx for all your help..................

The shot of the dash SHOWS it's a 1973...............matches the dash out of a 1973 Mach1 a friend's dad owns.

71 Item Detail 72/73 Item Detail the hole is a useless seat belt light added in 72.You should just take the drivers side fender off you'll find the real vin will have two stars around and some numbers.Only way its not there is someone replaced the sheet metal with new or could be wrong if its been wrecked and they used parts off another car.
