Dave, they did back then didn't they!
66 resto, well after pulling the engine out of the car and determining that the 289 was .060" over +.003 of wear, I decided to get a different motor.
I lucked out and found a new 302 block with a new cam on Craigs List.
Had already located a machinist who magnafluxed it after I bought it and found all to be well.
Since then, last week ago Friday, I have been researching heads, cams, lifter, carbs and the lot to make a decent decision about what I will use to build it up.
I read something everyday on the car. Today I ordered the new harmonic balancer along with flex plate both with 50 oz counterbalance weights. And I have a set of keys and locks coming since the ignition key cylinder is shot on my 66.
Then of course I ordered more reading materials.
I have to meet with the machinist again so we can finalize what internals we will use and who will supply them. Heads and intake and most likely the carb will be Edlebrock at 600 or 650 cfm. I have to get a new oil and fuel pump, and will see early this week how the oil pan cleans up. This 302 was a later block so I am going with roller cam, I don't like the expense however.
So about two weeks ago I was planning on rebuilding a 289, now I am in the process of building what will be a new 302. I am trying to be at about 290 HP. When I bought the car I anticipated that the engine would be no good so this was not a surprise.
So far so good!
