I'm trying to determine all those things. I would like to stick with the stock bottom end. I have a 65 289 V2 and am not opposed to aftermarket heads, 4 barrel carb, & a beefy cam. BUT, if that's not enough power for my liking, I'll have to ramp up the horses. I would like to balance the upgrades with drivablilty, reliablity, gas milage and longevity. If I can get about a 14 second quarter with a stock bottom end, worked stock heads, heathy cam, 4 barrel 500 to 600cfm carb and a set of headers I'll be very happy (and approach 20mpg on the highway) . That said, if a set of aluminum heads gets me in the 13s - whoo-hoo! I have a GTO that runs mid 14s with a 400, ported stock heads (10.75:1), heathy cam, headers, stock 4 barrel, 400 turbo auto
tranny, and a set of highway gears under the back. If my Mustang can compare I will feel at home. With the 3:73 gears and almost 1000 pounds lighter the Mustang should have a chance in competing without over doing the motor.
I'm not really looking for guesses, but rather examples to help me detemine my recipe for a fast and solid drivetrain. I don't want to overbuild/overstress my little 289. Teardown of the motor will start this winter.
