I would probably get kicked out of the man's club for such a stupid mistake. Last weekend on a perfect fall day in Georgia, I was enjoying driving around in my stang that I completely spaced out and filled up my tank full of diesel fuel.
Long story short, the car smoked and the engine was rattling and knocking but I was able to drive it to a Big 10 tires where the owner jacked up the car. He and I drained the tank and filled it up with super unleaded and he also added a bottle of seafoam injection cleaner.
After that the car ran great as usual and I let it run for over an hour to get rid of any traces of diesel in the tank. My questions are:
1) Do you guys (gals) know I may have caused any permanent damage?
2) I plan on replacing the spark plugs this weekend, should I do anything else to the engine?
Thanks

Good question. Well at Shell stations they have both on the same pump one green and one yellow. Normally you could not make the mistake because the diesel nozel would not fit in new car's fill up hole.

I doubt you did much of any damage. Especially since it runs normal again. If there were any damage it would be internal to the engine and there's not much you can easily do about it. Since you have already flushed out the tank with gas I doubt there is anything else you need to do other than be more alert at the pump. If its not missing, the plugs likely didn't see any damage either. As far as the carb goes, its probably didn't mind the oil bath.

Not any more. The new gas stations around my area are incorporating the nozzles for gas and diesel into the same cabinet on the island. It is a different pump, but it's in the same cabinet. I've picked up the wrong nozzle before, but luckily realized it before pumping it in the tank. The diesel nozzle wouldn't fit into a newer cars fill neck. It's an easy mistake if you are tired.
I'd change the oil/filter this weekend when you are doing the plugs. When fuel is dumped in an engine that doen't fire, some of it could get down into the crankcase.
Don't sweat it - your probably OK. I think if there were any damage, it would show up soon after you got going again.

I think I would change the oil also. Diesel tends to get pass the rings. Don't feel to bad I had a kid working for me did the same thing in a pickup and it still running..4 years later

about a decade back, Chevron (I think) allowed jet fuel (kerosene) to contaminate a lot of their aviation gas. The engines pinged and detonated. Guess the pilots figured it out on their run up. Most didn't make it that far. No crashes were reported. The result was chevron paid to have over 200 aircraft engines overhauled. No small fee at 20 to 50 thousand a pop. Apparently running diesel or kerosene in gasoline engines is a big deal.

you should not have a problem. If you would of done the opiset you would not have a engine. Change ur plugs, filter and oil and you should be fine. Some people pore diesel wen they do oil change to clean the engine.
Thank you all for great feedback. I replaced the plugs and the fuel filter and will change oil this weekend. Took the car out today and drove it around for a while. Ironically it is running smoother now. It always ran great, but it seems that perhaps flushing the fuel tank (not by choice) and replacing the filters had really help its performance.
Also, I took this opportunity to replace all rubber fuel hoses. Some of the hoses were old and cracked.
