Default Advice on 1964.5 Mustang with 289

I am trying to decide if I should trade my 1997 jeep wrangler for this 1964.5 mustang with a 289. It is mostly restored and looks to be in good shape. I do not know what kind of body and engine work needs to be done but I do know that it needs a new generator. The front turn signals are missing and the steering wheels needs to match the color of the interior. It has fresh paint and new interior. Any advice on what to do, how much this car is worth, any possibe prolbems, and what to look for when I see it in person this weekend would be appreciated.

Pretty car. Like anything else, I'd say look around for rust on the floorpan, trunk, rear window, and subframe mounts. Engine compartment looks like it could use some help, so I'd expect to spend some money on some fresh paint, polish, and gaskets.

I'd trade a stock '97 Wrangler for that, unless it's just full of bondoed-over rust.

He wants 10 grand for it. If I get it I am going to trade my jeep for it and possibly some cash for it.

Sorry but $10K seems pretty high for a car that does not have a lot of the little things done. When I see a car with a nice new paint job and wheels, but a nasty engine compartment, mismatched steering wheel, and rusty pedals and worn pads, I just think you will be finding a ton of bondo and cheap repairs. I mean really the guy goes out and buys new rims and tires but does not fix the generator?

My guess is he is a flipper that buys and sells cars. They buy a $800 car get it running (just running) they spend a few weekends working their magic with bondo and then off to their buddies shop for a quick repaint. They may have used dye on most of the interior, and they have less then $5K into the car, then they flip it. Look at the front valance it does not have the lights reinstalled, new emblem kit, it does not have a 64 1/2 hood, the radio is not installed correctly, and look at the lower front corner of the drivers door (a spot known to rust out) anyone else notice the strange gap as well as the poor alignment of the door?

There is a guy here in LA that does this with old Fiats and MG's he gets them to run enough to power them down the road, but they sure do look good with their Armorall restoration. For $8-10K you can get a much nicer car.

Here are some I found on Craigslist not to far away:

Thanks for the input. What are the differences in the 1964.5 hood and the one that is on there? I also noticed that just to the left of the steering wheel the switch or knob closest to the door has an open hole what is missing there?

The door to fender gap is HUGE and something looks bad about it, and the picture is like 20 feet away so it has to be worse than it looks! I would say that car is worth $6500. The rocker panel also looks strange and wavy in that side angle picture.

Yeah you should look in Texas or California for a car and make a road trip out of it.

That hole is for the windshield wiper knob. Don't worry, you can't drive the car in the rain anyhow since the weatherstrip above the driver's door is missing.

Doesn't it rain in Alabama?

10K, you can buy one for like people said, 6500 or so, and put the difference PLUS the extra cash if you were to sell your jeep and you can easily make your car into a show/race car look. Yea. I posted some feedback in another thread that I've seen people go ridiculous and are selling their plain jane looking mustang for like 15K and up to 30K. Seriously! I'd be really careful for people saying they invested like 20K and selling it for $10k or so.

I am still undecided on what what mustang I want to get and am trying to sell my jeep. I found a 1971 with a 460 it was originally a 302. What do you think of this car or am I better off with somthing different. Thanks for the help.

I would say from what the pictures show you could buy that car around here for 6500 or less. It looks ok but it looks like the important things like motor are lacking. Old mustangs are everywhere around here I try to find one and drive or ship back east.
