Default High Volume or High Pressure

Okay, I'm putting my '69 Boss 302 engine back together for my '65 2+2 and was looking to get some legitimate reasoning for either oil pump. The reason for rebuilding the engine was loss of oil pressure at higher RPMs. At that time it had a high volume pump. So what's your take and why? Thanks in advance for your input.

you shouldnt have been lossing pressure at high rpm, that is when the oil pump should be making the most pressure regardless of what type of pump it is. i assume the found the internal problems that was causing that?

Yes I know that. That's why I rebuilt it. I believe it to be loose bearings as the engine was run hot once. I was getting 30lbs @ 4k and up rpms. The bearings showed alot of wear, the result of running it hot when the fan cored the radiator in a bad neighborhood. Long story. I'm leaning towards high pressure.

unlees you are planning to go with a 7qt pan stick with a stock volume pump....

based on what you have have there is no need for a high pressure pump......

just making sure you found the problem

i believe if youre using a bigger volume pan then go with a bigger volume pump to make use of it all. i might be mistaken on that.

If you are revving past 6500 then I would suggest the high volume and high pressure pump. If the rpm are going to below that point then the high volume is fine. Use a sump that matches the depth of your pan.
Be sure to use either a scraper or windage tray or both to keep the oil in the pan and not rotating around with the crank.

Every SBF expert I'v ever talked with says that a high pressure pump just isn't necessary.

High volume pumps are for engines with looser tolerances - like a well worn engine or certain race engines. They can also be used on engines with external oiling components, like remote filters and coolers.

For a standard rebuils, about the best pump you can buy is a Ford Racing SV/SP pump with a billit drive shaft. That's what I use on my street/track car.

HV and HP pumps put a lot of strain on the drive mechanism. You're more likely to shear a pin.
