Default 65 mustang ving # and location

I have a 65 mustang 200 ci I6 and I am curious about the vin number for this vehicle. The plate from the driver door has been removed, and there is a piece of metal that is screwed onto the driver side fender just under the hood. I have taken it off an scraped the black primer off of it and it is a standard tag that you can buy from mustangs unlimited or any place like that, that states this is not for title or registration purposes. So whoever wanted to could have just made one up. I dunno

I went onto a website and it told me that there was a warranty number and the vin number. I went to the Kentucky DMV and they had never heard of the warranty number. So what is the true vin number.

Does it start with a 65AI76...... or does it start with 5R07T.....

Thanks for any input.

Robbie

Hello. The 5R07T168130 is the vin. The 65A means that it's a standard interior coupe, the 23M means that the car had a scheduled production date of december 23

so the 65A number is nothing? I have gotten the break down of what the 65A number means off of the internet, but it is just weird that the dmv doesn't care about it, and the website is using the 5R07 number as the warranty number.

Was the 65A........ on the original car, or did it come years later.

Just trying to learn as much about the cars as I can.

The plate that you have pictured there is the data plate that was originally on the door. I don't know why someone would take it off the door and put it over the VIN stamping on your inner fender, though. As far as the Warranty number, that IS your VIN number.

Also, don't think of that top string of numbers as one number. It's a collection of numbers that represent some options that your car was originally built with.

-The 65A means that your car is a 2-door hardtop
-The R (which looks like it's been scratched out and re-stamped) means that the car was originally painted Ivy Green Metallic
-The 76 means that your interior was Black Crinkle Vinyl and Black Cord Pattern Cloth
-The 23M means it had a scheduled build date of December 23, 1964. But since these days were only a scheduled date your car was likely not built until after the first of the year.
-The 72 is the D.S.O. code (where the car was originally shipped) Your car was originally shipped to San Jose.
-The 2 means your car came with the 2.83:1 standard rear end for the 200 CI 6-cylinder engine.
-The 6 means automatic transmission.

Once you see what these numbers are it's easy to see why the DMV doesn't care about them. They are simply internal use codes.

I hope I've been of some help and welcome to the forum!
