Talking 557 in a 1965 Mustang fastback

just thought i would share, so me and my brother decided this weekend to start on his 65' fastback, its been in the shed for about 10 yrs. now and it has only been tooken apart and half primed, lots of things got in the way of this project, my car and he has 3 kids all under 6 and a new house yada yada yada.. he bought a 302 but i always tried to convince him to put a bb in it. he wanted to go with a 302 or 351w(not that there is anything wrong with that). so we have a 88 f-250 with a efi 460 and heavy duty 5 spd manual and 9'' all the stuff we really need is on the donor truck, which was our dads. also in the shed so we thought we would make good use out of it. we have a to get a mustang II frontend and shorten the axles and housing, and driveshaft and mabye put on a turbo..... we need to make a custom floor cause the car got "bumped" in the pilar when it was new and there is a wrinkle in the tunnel so we half to replace it and the pilar anyway. he wants to put in cj heads and we will refresh the block, shave it and punch it out to a 557 we will prob. tub and roll cage it. the goal is to kill everything around our area, be streetable and mabye do wheel stands(the wheel stands are my idea but prob. wont happen). also is there any place that sells a upper plenum that will fit under stock/mabye cowled 2.5''-3'' hood with this seup, or am i gonna half to make a custom? it will get a bunch of goodies but that will after the fact. just wondering if anybody has done this on here and any pointers or any thing/products to avoid. Thanks

Honestly I would just drop a small block in the car, I mean I don't want to be negative, but that 460 lump is not going to be much faster if at all then a nicely built 302, the car will handle like the truck you took the engine out of and to top it all of it is a massive project. The only thing that would be worse for this car is your brother and you having eyes bigger than your stomic and having a car that is taken apart, and cut apart to mount the suspension. Plus the fact that it is still going to cost a ton to get that motor in the car, and there really is no reason. If you are going to cut it all up at least stick a new 5.4 or 4.6 under the hood.

what 302 are you running? man-o-war block with a forged bottom , livernois stage III heads and twin turbos? it was always going to get a mustang II front end no matter what, and everything we need we have, or can fabricate, if you have 30 some cars mabye you could spare some parts i would like to hear your setup vs a 557 it is not going to be a dd but a project for us and a drag car. the torque curve will be massive and if our motor doesn't work out we could put in a 4.6 or 5.4 since we will have the mustang II front-end.

You have got to have some deep pockets to even be thinking about this. A $6000-10,000 drop in crate motor is the way I'd sure go in a '65'. I know of several with 302/347 Rangers running in the 11's for a whole lot less than you're going to have to dump into the project.

Remember, your estmates mean nothing. Ive come up with some equasions that put out your realistic cost and time for everything.

2(Estimated budget) = Realistic cost

3(Estimated Time) = Realistic timespan, unless your chip foose.

Haha, but seriously, i thought i was going to spend 500 bucks on painting my car, and so far its in primer and ive spent over a grand and its not painted...
Another thing, it may be a "Heavy Duty" 5 speed, but do you think it will take 700ft lbs of torqe without snapping? Even your 9 inch will need to have completly new racing internals. Not trying to be a a$$, just giving you some ideas.

Since you asked:

302 based Small Block 497 BHP NA
331 CI
Bore: 4.125
Stroke: 3.100
Eagle Rods
AFR Heads
Cobra Intake with 4 webbers
MSD Ignition

It was going into my friends GT40 replica he is building, but he ended up finding a set of Gurney Eagle heads and webbers so he is going that way. If you would like to pick it up $10,000 and it can be yours, just dyno miles on it.

And it is over 100 lbs lighter then the 460...

Both big blocks won't fit in a 64-66 car unless you cut the shock towers out and weld in a mustang 2 kit.If it was my car you can build a nasty small block then add a blower or turbo and some spray.
