Question 1967 Mustang Coupe straight 6 to V8 conversion

I have a '67 coupe with a straight 6 and 3 speed stick and want to convert to a V8 auto. Can this be done and what does it involve? Thanks

It can be done but there are some changes you will have to make. Front suspension will need to be upgraded for a V8 and you may have to put on V8 spindles. If you upgrade to a big block you will need to add shock tower supports.

Cool V8 spindles

Thanks for the info. How about motor mounts, tranny, rear end....would those have to be changed? Is it a lot of work to switch to V8 spindles?

Actually this is incorrect. The 1967 6 cylinder is the same as a 289 v8 car. If you go bigger than a 289/302, then there are several changes to the suspension, brakes, etc that should be made.

Hey Ragtop, Would that also apply to the radiator, motor mounts, and his Z-bar ? I would tend to think (but dont know for sure) that these would need to be changed irregardless.

Huh? The only 6 cyl that I know of that shares the same small block V8 parts is the L code 250 starting in 69.

In 67 the springs, suspension, and rear need to be changed. It is a light duty 4 lug setup. The radiator, accelerator pedal rod, motor mounts, engine gauge feed (wiring harness), exhaust, fuel line and a bunch of other small stuff needs to be changed out in a 6 to 8 swap.

Now adding in a manual to auto swap you'll need tranny cooling lines, auto shifter and linkage, kickdown linkage, possible driveshaft swap or rework the current one to the correct length.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. It can be done and has been done but most people will want to start with a V8 car at the beginning because it nickle and dimes you to do this. Adding in a tranny swap makes it even more costly. If you have a donor car life is much easier!

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

I think you need to do a little research and check the facts a little better. As I said, pretty much the same as a 289 in 67.

Thanks for the info from everyone. Looks like I need to do some research and get all of my ducks in a row before I do this!

Radiator could be reworked but easier to replace as well. I was quite certain the motor mounts, suspension needed to be changed as well. I have a 68 and when considering purchasing a 6 I knew I wanted an 8 and researched it pretty good and I know for the 68 suspension needed upgrading as well as quite a few other items that made more worth my time to hold out until I found an 8. Regardless it can be done and research it fully befor eyou begin so you do not miss anything. Good Luck.

Your lucky its a 67 you can just change the hubs to 5 lug then get the oem disc to bolt straight on.But you still gotta change the front springs tho.The rear end a 67-70 will fit and a 8 inch can be cheap to find look around.

Those above are correct on the Spindles, No Need to change them, you already have the C6OA Spindle on there.

FORD used the same exact spindle on EVERY Mustang that rolled down the assembly line in 67, Everyone from 6 Cyl to 428 Shelby destined units.

To put on Factory Style K/H Disc Brakes with 11 19/64" Rotors, 4 Piston Calipers, Strip the Spindle to a Bare, Bolt on the Assembly line Parts, Drive off with Disc Brakes.

I am going to be doing the same thing with my 1966 6cyl 3speed. Is this a bigger project with my car? I was told I could keep the 8 inch rear and possibly the suspension, what do you think? I wanted to go to a 351. Is jasper a good engine, I have heard good and bad things about them, and I have found a cheaper 351 then the jasper out there. Thanks
