Default 1966 Mustang Ext. paint color

Hello,
We are restoring my Grandmmother's 1966 coupe. The paint code is Z, which is called Sauterne Gold. Using PPG paint. We started painting inside the hood. I'm worried it is not the right color. On the can it says Brand code 43433 but the description is Florentine Gold Poly, sage gold Poly. Do I have the right paint? It looks more gold than I remember it.

I really don't know if you have the correct color but keep in mind that if you are using a modern base coat and clear coat system the color will "pop" more than it originally did in the single stage acrylic enamel that the factory used. Add in the fact that the original paint would have had some fading and oxidation from the years too.

When I mention the modern paints "pop" they are clearer and brighter than what they originally were. Lime Gold is one color that really looks much better in the modern paints. I will say that Sauterne Gold will look brighter too as being clearer more of the metallic will show and make it brighter.

There will likely be a slight shade variation too depending on the color of the primer used under the paint.

Ya when you are painting a car nowadays the names will be different. PPG paints are the way to go IMO. An example of the name changes for instance the original color on my car is Silverblue. Today the PPG paint name for the color is Blue Ice Metallic. But it matched up perfectly.

Default 1966 Mustang Sauterne - Dupont Called - Color Match Below

OK this post is because I have a 1966 Fastback Mustang CA orginal car ... trying to make a cool restomod what looks OG on the outside and all the goods on the inside...

Color Matching:
I spent the time and called 1.800.3.DUPONT ( go through the voice promts until you get to automotive color ... matching... blah blah blah) Here is what you will find talking to them.

Dupont Chromabase Base Coat - Color Code for 1966 Ford Z code.

In 1966 the color code Z is of course the Sauterne Gold Poly ....that's we all read about. However that color is discontinued... of course.

The conversation went like this. First we need to find a match ....I was told that the color code transfers to a F0501 Mazadas Fluorite Blond (no e ???) ... then he added (you need to add some green).

Then after talking to him further - (dupont mind you) I was told a MM133 Spectra Master Color number was also a fit ?? I dont even know what spectra master is.

Then after I told him that a Dupont jobber said its closest to C2 Gold Ash Chromabase BC P4974 - K H (those letters at the end were important I guess). He looked @ it and then said he has the chips in front of him ... and he says ... Yep that looks even closer ... and then he asked if there was a K at the end of my P4 number. I confirmed... this must mean add green ??

Long story short ... and it was a long story ... I went with the C2 Gold Ash P4974 - K H.

Here are the photos. In any case it sucks that we cant ever get the same color again ... but the good thing is ... this cars paint is fabulous.

Here is a link ... jams are done... The paint doesnt look the same in any picture - its silver, gold, green, whatever ... I did the best I could to match it ...... its beautiful.

It will have the 2 Wimbledon White Le Mans stripes when done of course....

Default Follow Up on the Dupont paint code for Sauterne -

So I did some more follow up - since no one else seems to have any input in this subject - it seems - I will complete it.

I got a 1962-1967 Napa color code chart book from a great guy who is an old school mustang dude in my neighborhood. Had it on a shelf. Original paint code chips book for chrysler / chevy / ford / etc. Actual chips all seperated by year and colors.. perfect condition....

My painter - only used the base code above - Gold Ash C2 - to start the formula mix - the mix is totaly custom - and has to be in order to try and get it to the Sauterne color match - Moral to the story - Good Luck To ALL - of you for Sauterne is gone forever (especially in Dupont Chromobase) and the colors we (1966 Z code car owners) use will all be slightly off, or will be our "interpretations" of the color going forward. Sad... but oh well. For if you seen the original paint chips - that has to be one of the uglyest colors on the planet - no wonder not many cars came that color and they dont have the codes to make it anylonger. Suggestion get a great painter like I have and he will make it close but make it "beautiful" in todays color, pearls and base plus clear technology.

Thanks for all the help everyone great forum - not a single response ?? -

Default Follow Up on the Dupont paint code for Sauterne -

Oops sorry for the ending comment in my last reply - for some reason my screen never showed the follow comments by everyone - Im rude - and take it all back - sorry - nice help !

What I did find is that my pictures vary so bad. Angle and flash going off makes the car paint look almost - brown - a silver - gold - or a green - its weird. Each picutre looks different color. I go to the car and look and it looks nothing like the photos - Im going to go forward with the color since it is nice - probably missed the sooo green mark.... however look how green the paint is in the cup photo in the link I provided - totally confusing....

I looked @ the links provided above regading the coup sauterne - dont think Im as green - and I think mine is doing the POP thing mentioned above ...

Thanks everyone !

Mike
