Default What to do, Fastback and GT Coupe?

This is post can go along with the post I made called... "66 GT mustang codes" That you can use for your reference.

I'm restoring a 66 A code 4 speed Fastback that came with some nice original options, such as Rally Pack, Wood Grain Steering Wheel, Steel Style Wheels and etc. This car is not a GT car. The car also had no motor or tranny and was missing all the options and more when I got it.

I was thinking about converting it to a GT car, that's why I purchased the 66 GT coupe, (to transfer the parts to my Fastback). But now I have second thoughts.

My son and Daughter both want the GT and I'm now thinking about selling it for money to go into the fastback. If I sell it, I was thinking about taking the drive train out for my Fastback and put in another 66 289 and 4-speed that I purchased for my Fastback. I do like the idea of the GT coupe engine, (correct autolite 4100 carb) and 4 speed top loader for my Fastback. But I'm also thinking about if I should keep this GT coupe all together and not take it apart. Would I get more money with the correct drive train or would it not matter so long as I put in another 289, (Holly carb) and etc?

I was also thinking about doing a T 5 conversion and keep the 66 289, (came from a Fairlane) that I already have and keep it as original as I can using the options the car came with.

What would you people do?

Thanks, Greg

I think you would be money ahead if you keep the Gt coup intact if you are selling it. the value is much much greater is the drive train is original numbers matching.

As somewhat rare the Gt coups are, you would not want to destroy it by parting it out and changing things.

Besides, since the fastback has no drive train, you gain nothing in value by using the drive train from the GT coupe while foolishly destroying a number matching car.

T5 is a good idea for the fastback. I'm somewhat old school so I prefer the 4-speed toploaders but a T5 would be nice.

Please, please....... do not be foolish and take the drive train out of the GT.

Hello. Ditto that. Losing the original driveline would knock the bottom out of the value of the coupe. Coupes aren't really in high demand in the first place, and they really need to have all of the Is dotted and Ts crossed to have a respectable value. And, that sounds like a really nice car. It would be a lot of fun to ride around in. Seems like your fastback had a mid october build date, didn't it? The stuff from the coupe is just a little bit late to pass for original to the fastback. It's close, but, not quite there. One non-original driveline in the fastback would be as good as any other.

A t5 with the right shifter most won't know its not a 4 speed/I would use a 302 in it just make it driveable leave the coupe alone tho.

Hello all,

Thanks for the comments. When I first bought this GT coupe, (sight unseen) I was planning on using the parts for my fastback. Then when I saw the car I started getting second thoughts. This GT Coupe is way to good to take any parts from it. I agree with everyone that it should stay a numbers matching car, and it will!

I think I will put it on ebay in the next couple of weeks and see what happends. If it doesn't sell I will keep the car and may restore or just hang on to it for a while.

Thanks, Greg

If you want it to look more like a 4 speed car, and don't want that big square shifter you can always go with http://www.cjponyparts.com/images/1000/MSL4.jpg
