Default Newbie with Mid-Life Project

A quick intro with a couple of questions...

I have just acquired my mid-life crisis project; a 67 Stang Coupe. I'm only a year older than the car. The car has seen better days and looks better in the photo. The paint job and the interior were done in Juarez Mexico and, well, you get what you pay for!!! It has a 2-barrel Autolight carb that is not listed in the Haynes manual. It has the 289 c.i V8 that was standard for that year. It needs some work but so far it sounds great.

It appears to be pretty much stock. As we get acquainted I am finding items that I am not familiar with...for example in the photo of the lower dash there is a knob near the light switch that currently goes to nothing. I'm thinking of possibly a manual choke lever, but not sure. Also on the right is a rectangular light that sometime comes on when i turn the key to the on position. Again, I'm not sure of the function since the lens for this light is broken. If it were a diesel it would think of the glo-plug 'wait' light.

As soon as I get the brake system up and running, then plated i will drive it around to further our acquaintance.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,
Welcome to the group, the knob is a manual choke that should go directly to your carb. The light on the right is either a seat belt or brake warning light. Maybe one of the '67 experts can tell you which one.

Congratulations on your project! There is guaranteed to be someone here who knows anything you might ask. Veronica seems to be some sort of classic Mustang savant; I think she may actually be a self-aware computer running in the basement of Ford HQ.

I'm 99% certain that's the seatbelt indicator. You can tell that the idea was relatively new back then because the indicator just screams "bolted-on after-thought", doesn't it? I believe the bezel is supposed to say "Seat Belt" on it. A pic of a replacement is attached, along with a pic of the driver's side dash of my car (just ignore the ugly steering wheel wrap; not my idea).

I learned something about the knob on the left side; I never traced it back to the carb and I wonder if (OK, I'm pretty sure) it was the root of Nana's unending struggle to get the Mustang started in the morning. I grew up (in HS auto shop mid-80's) with automatic chokes; I never thought about manual chokes on the older engines. Duh!

I mean lens, not bezel. Can't edit posts after 30 minutes have elapsed, apparently.

The knob on the left looks like the fresh air vent control to me , thats where it is on my car anyway .

I would have to agree with hypostang, the knob is to open the fresh air vent that should be located under the dash, in the corner, right near the kick panel.

Well, so I learned something different from what I thought! Guess the cold start problem was carb trouble all along.

Found one pic of a replacement cowl vent + knob. Looks like the same thing.

Also found a pic in my stash that shows the knob and the vent tucked up under the dash, I think.
