Default How much is an "A" code Cougar worth?

Hi all,
I have a 2003 Harley Fatboy for sale or trade on ebay: Harley-Davidson : Softail:eBay Motors (item 300361162904 end time Nov-02-09 16:42:21 PST)

Someone want's to trade a nice 1967 Cougar for my bike. I do not have much experience with Cougar's so I thought I'd ask here how much is a perfectly straight "A" code Cougar worth. I can't find hardly any comparables. Thanks

Really unique cars like A code Cougars are really hard to set values to. There just aren't enough previous sales and to set values against.
So really, it's worth what ever you are willing to pay for it.

Hello. If it's not an XR7 and is a good, solid car with no rust, decent paint and interior, runs ok, brakes, steering amd suspension are good, maybe 7 grand. If it's an XR7 and all of the above is true, tack on a grand or so. You can buy S code ( 390 big block 4bbl) 67/68 XR7s all day that are nice cars for 10 or 11 all day. I have no idea what the bike's worth, but, my gut-level feeling would be something in the 10 or 11 range if it's nice and not all scraped up, like they have a tendency to become. So....... I guess I would want something to go along with the Cougar that was worth 3 or 4 grand if it was me.

Hi again. I just looked at the ad on your bike. That's pretty.

I was kinda thinking the same thing, but wasn't sure. I put the reserve on my bike at $11,750. He is telling me his car is worth $15k to $20K. So I'm thinking, is there something I'm missing here? Is his car special?

It depends heavily on the cars condition and history.
A code Mustangs have sold for more and are far more plentiful.

I'll say again, it depends on what you are willing to pay for it.
I'm a Cougar fan having had several. I would hesitate to spend that much money on a 67 Cougar even though it was my first car. It would have to be perfect and the right color originally.
However I would quickly pay that much for an excellent 70 Cougar/351c-4v though.

Hi again. He won't get anything close to that for the Cougar. They built more A code Mustangs because they were selling more Mustangs. A lot more. Personally, I like the Cougars, also. But, I realize that, at the end of day, it's a Mercury Cougar. With identical options, an A code Mustang will outrun an A code Cougar, a Boss 302 will outrun a Cougar Eliminator, an S code Mustang will outrun an S code Cougar, etc... The Mustang handles better than the Cougar. Some things are rare for a reason. People, in general, always have, and still do, find the Mustang to be a much prettier car than the Cougar, and this is reflected in the pricing. If you go through Hemmings or ebay or something you will see that you can buy cars just like this guys or better for significantly less than 10K all day long. The problem that you are about to encounter will be that, no matter how many cars like, or better than, his that you find for 8K or less, you will never make him believe that his car is not something rare and special. You'll be faced with the choice between either A) taking a beating on your bike, or B) just selling your bike and buying a better car from someone else and still have some money left over.

Thanks for your help, the cougar/mustang comparison helps. Even if I did a trade with the cougar and $4k I'd still have have a hard time getting the cougar off my hands.

Hi again. If the Cougar isn't something that you would want to keep, then I would definitely have to pass on that one. The market on these cars is a little soft right now. It's starting to get a little better, but.....

For at least 30 years it seems it has always been that with a comparable Mustang vs Cougar that the Mustang will sell for more money. I can't explain it but its the reason that I bought a Cougar when I needed a parts car because the Mustangs were more expensive.

Collectors want to have the most unique cars. Not the most popular, fastest or best handleing.
Watch for Cougars to gain value significantly in the future.

Also, There is loads of evidence that would make for a lively debate about which platform actually handled better. The cougars were more balanced and enjoyed a very successfull road racing program with Bud Moore Engineering until Ford stopped them. Seems they didn't want the big cats eating any ponies.
