Found some guy selling a 289 Mustang. Couple things need to be replaced is spedometer cable is broke but guy says he has a new one, claims a 6 by 6 hole in the passenger floorpan which sounds not that bad but might replace the whole side later on in the future. Couple dings in the back that can be fixed when I start to do the body work on it. Guy said it's been bored out to a 302 but told him I'm going to replace the heads with Edelbrocks anyways. Is there a website to check VINs if you guys' know?
When I was looking for my Mustang, I looked at a '68 California Special for sale in San Bernadino. As usual with many ads saying the car was in great shape, it wasn't. It had been hit hard in the front and actually had a '67 nose on it. It was pretty tough structural shape too, so I passed. I later found my '67 Convertible in Studio City, CA.
Nice looking Coupe. It looks pretty solid, but the seats, door panels and head liner have got to go! I think it has been treated to what's called a Tuck and Roll job.
Your engine may be a 302, or have 302 parts, because you can't just bore a 289 out to a 302, with out increasing the stroke with a 302 crank. There's not enough meat on the block for that. My 289 bored out .040", is approximately a 294 CID. .040" is about the most you want to bore a 289 although some do it to .060". Either the previous owner is full of sh%t, or he just doesn't know what he's talking about.
Does the engine run?

Tuck and roll looks like you drawn a line straight down from the top to bottom. That car has the diamond with buttons pattern from the late 70s early 80s.To me i would pass or talk him down to 3k replacing the interior they screwed up is a easy 2k.Fixing the floor pan maybe 1500 and probably has a leaking cowl or windows the water had to come from somewhere.
67ragtopStang, if my trim/upholstery teacher heard you say that in his class you would fail. (I go to a college for auto restoration.) The very untasteful interior is called "Button Tufted". It was extremely popular on early cars, especially open cars. The diamond patterns are just top sewn into the material, then the buttons, are anchored to the seat frame through the foam/buns, pulling the fabric down around them. I must say, I question the replacement "G" on the trunk lid. Otherwise that is in extremely good looking shape.

The problem right now is I'm 5-10 minutes from Mexico border and he's like an hour and a half or so away from me. I told him I'd meet up with him at my bank to check it out. So assumingly if he's going to drive it, it should run.. As far as the 302, he just told me him and a friend bored it out and didn't go much further details. I might not even meet up and maybe not even do this transaction because of all the advice I'm getting from you guys, and you guys sound more logical than he does. That rust in the floorpan kind of gets to me a bit too, to what Andrew said. Maybe I should pass this one up. I thought about paying the extra bills for this one maybe 1967 ford mustang cpe or this one 1965 Ford Mustang
I don't really want a PROJECT but something where I don't have to put so much into the car just to fix, instead of enhancing. Like this one gave me a heart attack: 1965 MUSTANG BILT 289 NEW INT
If any of you Cali guys know anyone or can find one from a 65-68 V8, let me know. I've just been finding ridiculous prices. I THOUGHT about taking a 65-66 inline 6 and maybe do the whole swap thing BUT I'm figuring paying to replace parts, might as well just buy a V8.

66, I know I would fail on terminology that's why I said "I think...."
So, what is a Tuck and Roll?
SDMustangRider, I'm partial to '67's and that Black '67 for $5500 looks OK, but the photos are not that great. It looks like it might be better than the red '67. At least you would not have to do the interior over. It would be worth a look.
Regarding the red '67, if you like the "Button Tufted" interior, then a 6"x6" floor repair is nothing. You just need to find out if it was caused by a leaky heater core or from a much more expensive to repair cowl leak.
Regarding looking at the car at your bank, for the first look at a car, don't go with cash in hand. You don't know what situation you might be getting into. What ever you do, make sure the seller has a clear title to that car and that the VIN on the title is the same as the VIN stamped on the drivers inner fender. The drivers door tag is not a legal representation of a VIN.
Good luck!

The 2 shots of the hole in the floorpan is the same hole. I figure I can get a nice piece of metal to cover it up and have it welded by someone for not that much. I"m trying to get his vin right now to run it on that decoder. As for money, I told him I have a cashier's check so basically he won't get it unless the car is legit.
I agree from the pictures posted that car is worth $2500-3000, the interior is all useless. Those other two links you posted, the 1967 is decent looking but I would try to get it for $4500, the second 1965 for $5500, that thing is WAY overpriced. The third link is ridiculous, any coupe for $15000 should be almost perfect and a coupe for $15000 that needs body work... what a joke.
