Not that i don't love the sound of the engine. Its just sometimes you want to listen to music. What recommendations do u have as to the best speakers, wiring, setup console, etc...............
It's all really going to depend on what your budget is and what kind of sound you are looking for, and what if any modifications you are willing to make (i.e. cutting dash for a modern head unit). If you are looking for a stock appearance then your options are fairly limited as far as head units. This place has modern type head units to fit in the factory location without modificaiton CUSTOMAUTOSOUND.COM. Of course this means if you want a CD player you will have to hook up a CD changer and if you want an iPod connection there are some places that will retrofit the head unit with and iPod connection.
Another good way to get better sound is to Dynamat the car. This is a sound deadening material that you would install in the doors, under the carpet, and in the trunk. This helps to eliminate road noise as well as the hollow metal sound.
I know alot of people will start posting complaining about CustomAutosound so I will post right now. I heard that their OLD stuff had problems, and that they have greatly improved their equipment.
In fact I will vouch for that as I have a custom autosound. I have the CustomAutosound USA-6 with an MP3 input and a 10 CD Changer in the trunk.
As for speakers, I have their dual core dash speaker. It's really nice, it's basically having stereo sound, but it fits in one speaker hole. I was going to get the same thing for the back tray and make it look factory, but nobody carries it anymore. So I am just going to get 2 6x9 speakers, cut holes in the package tray (or buy Mustangs Unlimited's upholstered one with the 2 6x9 holes) then put original style rear deck speaker grilles over them to make them look factory and to prevent anybody from trying to steal them.
Anything from Custom Autosound is pretty much junk
OK - since it came up (still hard to believe anyone would recommend Custom Autosound) - pretty much anything from Custom Autosound is junk.
I have also heard stories of great improvement, but improvement of junk is still junk. I have a unit sitting on a table in my garage that I cannot give away. Most people just laugh when I ask them if they want it.
nice unit with a USB port in the rear - or another model for '67 - '73 Mustangs.
I have not seen any complaints about these, but feel free to search and see what feedback they have.

Cobra6, I have NEVER had any problems with my Custom Autosound and I have had it for over 2 years. The sound is still good, the look is still good, and everybody I meet likes it. Although, we didn't get it straight from Custom Autosound, we got it from a classic car audio shop on ebay, so maybe they fixed whatever was wrong. Either way, it works like it should, and it never gives me trouble, other than resetting the clock when I disconnect my battery. LOL
Mike - I am really glad that your unit works well - really, I am.
I also think you should have bought a lottery ticket the same day you bought that CAS unit.
All you have to do is search on this forum and any other classic car forum to see what kind of reputation CAS carries - anything from poor workmanship to not haveing the power output as advertised. I was reading a post recently where the radio would not even stay tuned to a station while the car was running - pretty basic stuff for a radio.
Again, I am glad you have had a positive experience - I just am hesitant to "recommend" their products and service.

The OP's signature says it's a '68, which has the removable stereo faceplate mount. You can get these aftermarket but I believe they're plastic and pretty flimsy?
I didn't want to cut my factory one ('67) as it was in good cond. so I picked one up off fleabay that already had holes in it, dremeled/sawed/filed it out to fit the DIN radio size and made a 'U' bracket to solidly mount it (I overdo things if you can't tell..).
I'm putting 6X9's under the package tray, 4x6 in the deluxe door grilles and 2 4"? in the dash is the plan.

Cobra, Ok I recommend their stuff, just not from them. j/k I don't really fully understand the power out and stuff like that. To me as long as it works properly and does what its supposed to I am happy. And their customer service wasn't bad either. When I got it, it had these ugly cheesy black knobs that look like the originals. I called them, said "hey what gives", and they said sorry we will send a new set out to you immediately. 3 days later new shiny chrome knobs showed up at my house. So maybe they really are trying to turn around that bad rep.
Jonk, don't put them UNDER the package tray. Go the whole way and CUT the holes. Right now, I have the single center mount speaker in the back ($10 durabrand for now), and I didn't cut a hole. The only time I can hear it is with the radio up really loud because the package tray bounces and vibrates, or when I have the trunk open.
I've never dealt with CustomAutosound, but like many else have said, heard horror stories, and heard success stories. lol.
What i have is the cut out dash with the thing that Jonk67 has, but what i suggest, if you'd rather have it look original is an Under dash kit, they're not too expensive to get, or install.
If your car is a 67 up get a din sized bezel then use just any aftermarket radio out there. Then replaced all the speakers maybe add one small sub for some thump.

Can't speak from firsthand experience but have read a few posts about the DIN repop versions and they're plastic and pretty flimsy so you have to give the radio extra rear support but i think that solves it.
Sprint, haven't mounted the rears yet, I may cut / mount them in the tray but I will be covering the tray with red thin cloth to match the interior with no speaker girlls to hide the speakers and give a smoother look. I will have 6 speakers, none visible, we'll see how it sounds.

Ok, just don't put them under a solid package tray. Trust me, it sucks.
Ohhhh, no the package tray cover won't be solid, my original crumbled after 40+yrs. of sun. I bought some fiberboard (thicker also) from HD and made a new one. The holes are cut for the 6x9 speakers.
I'll cover it with a screen to keep the area of the holes taught, then cover with red thin fabric so it will be smooth but the speakers will play through. I replaced the insulation under the tray also and have speaker cones so the sound doesn't bounce in the trunk. I'll fiddle with it when done to get the best sound.
