Default Flames from the exhaust pipes?

Everyone's seen em, whether in Gone in 60 Seconds(the second one) or whatever, you've seen them on the old hot rods shooting flames out of their tail pipes. Well, how do they do this? I've heard a story but I'm not sure how true it is, so wondering if anyone knows how they do it? Just kinda somethin that's been rollin around in my head.

Hello. You have to install a fitting near the end of the tailpipe for a spark plug and a switch inside the car. Most cars like that are seriously over-carbureted to begin with so you just need something to touch off all of that raw fuel that's going through the exhaust.I've always thought that it looked pretty cool on other people's cars but it's kind of hard on the paint back there so i've never done it to one of mine.It would be handy though in case someone tried to put their foot on your bumper or lean against the back of your car or something. "whoops.Sorry, dude"

Haha, yeah. Well, my exhaust is going to be what we've always referred to as "Nascar" exhaust where it exits before through the side in front of the rear tire. So in case I'm losing in a drag race, it's always good to know I can light the other guys car on fire.

My dad said what they used to do in the 50's is they would mount a coil and plug near the end of the tailpipe. Then they would unplug one of the spark plug wires, so that 1/8th of the engine's fuel would be going through unburned, but yet the car would still run OK on 7 cylinders. Then you have a dash switch to turn the rear spark plug on and off. This is old school stuff, I don't think it would work well on a later model car with a catalytic converter, because it's job to make sure no unburned fuel gets thru. But on a pre-catalytic Mustang should be able to do it.

So do I also have to hook up another coil if I want to do this or just run 12v to the plugs? I'm definitely not gonna run my car on 7 cylinders, even if it will still run fine.

First of all, you shouldn't do this, it is dangerous and silly...and an easy way to loose a great car. If you have ever seen the old pros that do this they hav 18 inch tail pipes.

The proper way to do it is not to use gas blown past valves in the motor. You tac a sparkplug in the tailpipe at the back, you run a second coil just for it, and you run either a low flow second fuel pump with an on/off switch or a gravity feed set up (small resevoir up in the trunk that runs down.

Thumbs up

The kits sold for this purpose contain a circuit board connected to a dash switch.

You blip the throttle and the board cuts the spark briefly sending raw fuel into the exhaust.

A plain jane automotive coil connected to a sparl plug ignites the unburned fuel provinding the pyrotechnics. One each for dual exhaust.

Illegal as heck, but looks mondo kool!

That sucks though man. I woulda really liked to have done this. I realize it's illegal and therefore would never do it on the street, but dodgestang said I could ruin my car that way, so I guess I prolly shouldn't.
