Exclamation 68 ignition problems

I just pulled my 68 mustang out of the woods after 16 years!! After cleaning up the fuel system new carb, coil, points, condenser etc. I still cannot get a spark. I also have no power going to the positive side of the coil. I pulled the ignition switch out and have power to the switch and all of the postions on the switch. The wiring diagram shows the pink wire from the ignition switch at some point change to a red with a green stripe and that goes to the coil. Is there a fusible link that may have gone out? I also tried to jumper from the battery to the coil directly and have power to the points but no spark. The motor turns over and the points are gapped correctly and are opening and closing. I am baffled. The car ran fine when I put it out to pasture so to speak and had no wiring problems but I would be grumpy if I sat out there for 16 years too. This is my high school ride I am trying to resurect.

Dude, you're in for a world of trouble.

You may as well have the car overhauled, as all your hoses, gaskets, etc, are probably dried out, and your charging system probably has a lot of contact issues due to corrosion.

You're gonna' haveta start with the starter solenoid and work your way through the ignition, cleaning all the contacts, and replacing wires.

Always run the car at least once every two months to keep it in running condition. It's even MORE crucial for the older cars, as the tolerances and materials aren't up to modern standards.

Hello.Welcome! Your problem isn't as serious as you might be thinking. If the motor turns over when you have the key in the 'start' position, then you can rule out the battery, cables, engine ground, starter solenoid and ignition switch wiring. The pink wire that you mentioned is the resistor wire.It goes all the way to the firewall connector, where it becomes the red/green stripe that goes to the coil.It plugs into a wire that goes to the ignition switch. That connection is very corroded by now.Carefully unplug the connection and clean it up.You also want to unplug the engine gauge feed from the firewall and clean up those connections also. One of them is the wire that goes from the ignition switch to the coil.In short, your problem is between the ignition switch and the spark plugs.I should say 'your problems are' instead of 'your problem is'.You might want to run those spark plugs in and out a few times also. The ones that sat there for 16 years had to get very rusty, along with the threads in the cylinder heads. That is their ground and no ground,no spark. If you do get it started you will still be rebuilding the motor and tranny in the very near future.Good luck.
