Default 351 heads good deal?

hi i was at a swap meet this weekend and saw a set of 4bbl open chamber cleveland heads and stock 4bbl intake there for 175 american. he said the heads were redone? not sure what he meant exactly but i have a cleveland in my 68 thats a 2bbl and its a 73. was jsut wondering if u guys thought it was a good deal? i'd liek to eventually put it into the 70 since its the original type of engine for the car and it came as a m code. also if the heads are a 70 or 71 would i get the same performance as 70 or 71 engine? thanks

Hello.I'd say that sounds pretty fair,if the heads actually have been redone. The 4bbl cleveland heads will have a '4' cast into the corner. If the heads where in a car with valve covers on,you would be able to see the 4 on the front outboard cornerof the D/S head. You will probably enjoy having a 4bbl on your car.

hehe thanks i'm dying to get the car on the road since we had a nice week above freezing! i guess i should call the guy and see what he did to the heads and what year they are. but he did say open chamber so does that mean they are later heads? and would my 73 2 bbl heads already have the hardened valve seats in them from the factory? sorry for asking so many questions i jsut don't wanna jump on this and then find out i shouldn't have gotten them lol. thanks

'73 open chamber heads won't give you the horsepower of the closed chamber '70-71 heads. the combustion chamber is larger will give you a lower compression ratio than the closed chamber heads and they are also more prone to pre-ignition. $175 is an ok price, but you are better of getting a pair of 4v closed chamber heads. try this sites classified section http://www.network54.com/Forum/119419 or ebay.
good luck!!!

If you're looking for GREAT Cleveland heads, there's a company in Australia that came out with what they call 3V heads. It uses the bigger 4V ports, but the 2V closed chambers. They're pricey but probably some of the best heads you can get for the best 351.
