Default Couple transmission questions

My transmission has been acting up lately, slipping out of 1st gear and not engaging. I took it to the tranny shop and they said it would be about $900 or more to fix. Now for $900 I'm thinking I might be able to buy a relatively new transmission. I'm just a little unsure of what transmission I have though. I'm pretty sure I have a C4 since its a 3 speed auto. I'm just wondering what other transmission options I have avaliable to me, and what will fit in my '66 and hook-up to my engine with no or little modification.

Also, if anyone knows good and not over priced place to pick up a tranny I'd be delighted.

Does it keep doing it or does it do it only once when the car is cold?

It happens the most when the car is cold. It also slips out of gear when I make turns just after starting up.

You may just need to adjust your shift linkage. I have a very similar problem with my 'Stang. I back down my driveway in the morning and shift it into drive to get on my way and... nothing... Park... Drive... Park... Drive... Park... Drive THUNK. There we go! And it doesn't happen again until it's been sitting for a while. I've just been too lazy to fix it.

Anyway, just my two cents, but you might check that out before you spend the money to have it overhauled...

Also, if that doesn't work, YearOne has TCI's mildly upgraded C4 transmissions for $588. (Click here to go to the case filled model.) Side note: does anyone know what the heck they mean by "pan filled" and "case filled"? Is it what it sounds like it is?

Thanks Ninja, I just got the car back from the body shop, hopefully I'll get a chance to screw around with the linkage this weekend.
