I have a 1968 mustang coupe 289 bored out to a 302, it has new pistons, rocker arms, racing cam, (block was fresh then redipped and bored?), it has a 650cfm holley carb, edelbrock performer air gap intake, oh ya its a 4spd manual, i just wanted to know if anybody could give me an estimate on how much HP it might have?
Thanks......

Are you familiar with the phrase garbage in/garbage out? There has not been enough information for even a SWAG (scientific wild arse guess) or an EWAG (Experienced wild arse guess) and anything posted up will be from the RDB (rectal data base)
So....now....
Stock 289...about 220 FWHP
Stock 302...ranged significantly depending on year.
289/302 with an intake, moderate cam, headers, etc.....maybe 250-260 but things like compression ratio, heads, actual cam specs can sway those numbers significnatly in either direction.
hi i have a 289 with a holly 4bbl this winter i am planing on rebuilding the engine i was planing on spending no more than $3000. i was wondering what should be done to get the most power. is boring it out to a 302 or stroking it an option.

It's an option, but the cost of machining is what's going to determine your total cost. Since it varies so much by where you live, it's hard to say what you can do.
In Topeka, I was able to put together a great streetable 325 hp engine for $4,000, $5,500 installed, but that was 14 years ago. In Arkansas, it was a bit cheaper, in Kansas City, it cost 15% more.

To BORE a 289 to achieve 302 would mean you would have to bore it out 90 thou! I don't think there would be too much cylinder wall left!!
Whats wrong with a 289 anyway. For $3000 the best thing to do would be a good quality rebuild with high quality parts and a strong bottom end. You can spec whatever cam you want, a performance intake manifold, some head work and valve gear etc, and then spend the rest on a good exhaust. That will give you a stong reliable motor, that will last for years, and have considerably more power than you had. If your budget stretches a little further, then look at a stroker kit, but you will still have to upgrade the exhaust, as well as the carby, and probably the trans, the brakes etc.

the 302 is actually a stroked 289.

Are you telling me this?
The original thread asked if his 289 could be Bored or stroked to a 302. I know a 302 is a stroked 289. I was responding to the BORE element of the question.
So if there is nothing wrong with the crank or rods on the 289, the little extra power provided for the cost of getting a 302 crank and rods, over the 289 is a waste of time and money. Better off spending it on the above mentioned mods, or really spend some money and go for a 347 stroker kit.
How about this: i have my 289 block in the shop right now. Bored .040 over. It's going to be stroked to a 302 with a stock 302 crank and a stock cam as well. The valve size on the heads have been opened up to something like 1.75/1.55 inches. Stock screw-in style studs and rockers. The top end will be a edelbrock 302 rpm intake and an edelbrock 600 cfm performer carb. 17" flex-a-lite fan and stock exhaust manifolds with true dual exhaust. Any estimate on hp?
