Default 72 Muastang Boss 351 conv?

Greetings~

I have purchased a 1972 mustang conv. I know the 2nd owner, who knows the 1st owner who states the car was ordered from ford with the following options; 351 HO eng w/Hurst 4spd. front/rear spoilers & nasa hood.

I got to see an original picture of the car, it showed the stripes down the sides and inplace of the mach 1 decal there was a BOSS 351 decal. The 2nd owner said the 1st owner complained when the car came in with mach 1 decals on the sides and that the dealer put the BOSS 351 decals on it instead The 2nd owner also had aftermarket air installed. The car has been repainted & restored, but has not had the stripes put back on (Im doing this as well as putting the magnum 500 wheels back on the car).

My question is was there such a car?
Where would I get those decals?
Is there a site that would have the info I need?

Thanks in advance..

Default My own reply

Ok I found the decals, and some limited info googling the web.

I guess not much is known on the convertibles, I do know they could be optioned with the 277hp BOSS 351 and mach one spoilers & decals/stripes from the factory. There where a few in late 71 ( the new model yr) & early 72 that had the BOSS 351 decal but in mid 72 they only came with the mach one fender decal w/stripes.

There I answered my own question i think....

The original question was if anyone knew anything on the convertibles.....?

277hp is not the BOSS351, it's the 351CJ or 351HO which is a lightly detuned boss motor. 71 was the only year for boss351s, fastbacks only. No convertible Bosses or Mach ones. You COULD get the mach stripes, without the words MACH 1 on anything though.

Those decals are available through the Mustang suppliers. The ones I've seen you wet the car with soap and water then place the decal on and squegee out the water when the decal is in the spot you want. Similar to doing window tint.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

This is what I have to go one so far, http://www.boss351.org/HO.htm

The H.O. engine was available in any body style for '72. This opens the possibility of several unique combinations. A previous owner of a '72 "R" code car claims to have also had a '72 H.O. convertible. Some years ago there was a feature article on a Canadian who had matching yellow '72 H.O's. -- one SportsRoof and one convertible.

'72, the side stripes became an additional cost option even on the Mach One. "71 Boss 351's also have the "BOSS 351" decals on the fenders and trunk lid, while most H.O. cars received "MACH ONE" decals. There are some subtle differences in the hood treatment of both cars as well. '71 Boss 351's received a full hood flat paint treatment, either black or argent depending on body color, with "351 RAM AIR" decals on the side of each hood scoop. A few '71's have a small, metal tag in place of the decal. The '72 H.O. cars generally don't have the black or argent on the hood. If equipped with the flat hood treatment, '72 cars usually don't have the full hood painted. Instead, most '72 cars have a narrow portion painted in the front center that flares out to just the edge of the raised hood scoop portion of the hood.

an original owner of a '72 H.O., and he claims his came with Boss 351 Decals on the fenders and trunk. These could have been put on by the dealer, though. Imagine an excited young Boss 351 buyer waltzing into the show room in late '71. The Ford dealer explains the Boss 351 is no longer available, but he will try to find one. Several months later, Ford announces the H.O. as a Boss 351 in disguise, but with slightly lower compression. The local salesman remembers the young buyer, and makes a deal. The car arrives, but with "MACH 1" on the fenders. The local dealer fixes this problem by removing the offending decals and installing a set of proper "Boss 351" decals. This is probably what happened to any '72 cars that appear to have Boss decals from the factory.

Thank you for your responces I guess I would have etheir the Boss or mach one decal.. I just want it to look stock Im ordering the mag-500 wheels next & get rid of the aftermarket wheels.
