Steel wheel cover refurbish Greetings!
At some point, I want to have a vintage looking race car.
I recently finished redoing my stock 14" steel wheels which,
were still mounted to the tires on my car. I carefully sanded and re-painted them.
Prior to doing this, I turned in the whitewalls and to have the "vintage look"
started. The car looked like a vintage stock car!
As much as I liked it, I decided to redo my 1966 styled steel wheel covers.
Since the cost of original or new Shelby wheels are so expensive, I opted to
restore and modify my wheel covers to give them that "vintage look".
I used 100 fine steel wool and with hours of elbow grease, cleaned off the beat up
finish and removed the two-tone paint - frosted argent silver and medium gray.
The argent silver was covering perfectly good steel. With some metal polish and
a lot more "elbow grease" the weather beaten steel now looked like polished
chrome.
Next, I took masking tape and covered all of the polished areas that I didn't want
covered with paint - with the exception of the polished metal slots within the areas
that I did want to paint. As much as I liked it - too much of a chrome look was a
bit more than I wanted. You be the judge. |
