Default 1968 Mustang X Code Coupe. What value for insurance purposes?

Hi, new to this site.
I just purchase a 68 X code coupe, 390 2V, C6, 9-inch, A/C and a bench car. I purchase the car from the original owner. Looking around the internet I found out that these are rare cars, 544 produced.
The drive train has all been rebuilt with about 12K on it, runs out nice.
What a cool car.

The body has original paint but has small dings and dents, no rust. needs a repaint.

Interior needs full resto.

This car being what it is, the qustion I have is what kind of value do I put on it for instsurance reasons?
Pat

Hello. I'm afraid that you are about to discover that some things are rare for a reason. One thing that would be hurting that car would be that, after it's all said and done, it's a 68 coupe, which occupies the lowest spot on the vintage mustang body style totem pole as far as value goes. For most people a 2bbl big block makes no sense, since a 4bbl small block car will outrun it. The first thing that a lot of people would do is yank that 90 lb 2bbl intake off of there and put either a 4bbl, 3 deuce or dual quad aluminium intake on it to lose 50 lbs and probably gain 50 hp. Personally, I think that the bench seat is pretty cool, but few share my enthusiasm for them. Having A/C is a good thing. In really nice condition, that car would bring something like 20k assuming that it isn't a color like lime gold or diamond blue. If the paint is pretty tired and it needs pretty much a new interior, but runs and drives ok with no brake, suspension or steering issues, you're probably looking at something in the 10 to 12k range. A lot of people would look at it like it isn't an outright project car but it doesn't miss that by much. Hope that helps.

Thank's Veronica,
That was the info I was looking for, I knew it was an oddball car. But on the other hand, you don't find nice original car much now days.
I have a 67 fastback body that is 98% rust free, no motor or trans.
It would not be original, it could be period correct to trans plant the running gear out of the 68 to the 67 fb.

Welcome Pat,

I would concentrate on the fastback. I think they are hotter. If you are thinking of dropping the 390 onto the fastback....Veronica is correct. I would do modifications on the 390 before dropping it in. I have a 67 S code. Mildly modified small blocks will run circles around the X code. If the motor is tight....I would do Cams, (alluminum preffered)heads and alluminum intake (4BBL). That would make it a monster. If that is too pricey. I would do the cam and alluminum intake at a minimum.

What exactly are your plans for both cars??? Give us an update. Welcome to the group.

I personally would prefer to keep the coupe intact with it's original drivetrain. The 2v 390 drivetrain is rare and not overly desirable but it is an original car and different. How often do you see an original X code at a show. I would keep that car original and show it as such if I had it and would consider restoring it or just cleaning it up some when the fastback is done. I just can't see parting out a decent coupe even though it is only a coupe.

Since the fastback is missing the drivetrain and you're not concerned about originality I'd have fun with that car. To keep the car handling well I wouldn't consider the 390 for that car and lean towards a built 302 or a 347 stroker.

That's just what I would do with those vehicles but either way have fun with them.

Hopefully a 1969 convertible or Sportsroof (non Mach or Boss) for next Mustang project

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

Having fun is the keyword What is your sole purpose for the FB? If your going to be putting miles on it and be fast. Bored and stroked 302 ( not all the way to 347). But if your going to race it and not put many miles then a 347 is the way to go. 347 has great power but has some known reliability issues. Others would disagree (as always) and say they have had a stroker for a long time blah blah blah. All I can say is read up on it. Research is the key....Internet is your friend. If ya wanna be different Clevor is your friend (make your own BOSS).
