Hi guys.
I have been looking for a 1966 mustang or a 68 ,but found a 66 for a reasonable price but its a inline six . Wondering How much it would cost to get a 302 and swap it in to the stang. (i would not be doing the swap me and engines dont get along ..lol)
In my opinion, unless the price of the six cylinder car is really reasonable I'd wait to see if a V8 car becomes available. If you're not going to do the work yourself the problems of finding a good shop and all of the parts, engine ect. to accomplish this would be cost prohibitive. It would probably cost you more than a decent V8 Mustang. All the best,---Chuck
Ok thanks. Just undecided in what im gonna do ,realy want a 1968 mustang with atleast a 289 ,but i can get a jeep cherokee or a 99-03 f-150 . Dont know what i should do !
Looks like you're comparing apples to oranges. The Mustang, I presume, would be used for cruising and or "spirited" driving. Would you be doing the same thing with a Jeep or an F-150? Which would you choose? If it boils down to what you want or what you need I would go with what you need. Good luck,---Chuck
I know its apples to oranges lol. mustang i can restore but i would have to be driving my parents car alot , jeep i would have lifted and the works . f-150 my dad said he would help me put alot of hp under the hood ... but i got over 6 months to decide and make more money

A truck w/ a lot of hp would be a whole lot of gas! So, that puts you to ajeep or mustang? Do you want to go fast or just take the fastest way to get there????
Most people that swap from a inline 6 to a v8 spend around 3 grand in the parts alone labor if your paying it call it 2 grand more.So get you a v8 mustang its cheaper.A truck weights a lot if you want something fast a v8 rx7 or v8 miata are nasty cars.I have a 83 chevy 1ton with a mean 427 in it even with a over drive tranny i get 8mpg if i drive like a old woman.
No brainer, get the Mustang. Just don't put the V8 in it. In this case, I would have to agree with RagHead's signature about his straight 6 convertible. "Dare to be DIFFERENT. Stay INLINE"
I am with the other guys as far as the "6" goes. If you buy the car with the inline, KEEP IT IN THERE! There is a ton of power to be made by these little 6's. A good rebuild w/ some quality parts with a good midrange cam. (I have heard the early Ford turbo pistons work in these motors) ??? A crossflow 250 head from "Down Under" will wake these motors up big time. A small 4 barrel or a Holley projection and a cam and a split header and maybe a turbo down the line would make a real street sleeper and make the 4.6/5.0 racers cry.
My dad built a 300 inline truck motor with larger valves, hotter cam, boxed 4 barrel, header modified to accept a t3 turbo and put in my friends '69 Notch back mated to a five speed. Not alot of top end 125mph maybe? The low end was phenomenal!!! Beat the V8 crowd on a daily.
The same hop up tricks that work on a V8 will work on the L6 also (cam, head work, header, ect.) . Get the L6 Mustang and check out fordsix.com for some great ideas on building up the 6. The one thing thats true about speed, V8 or L6, it cost. The more speed the more cost.

I just bought the latest Mustang Monthly because it had an article on tuning the L6 to make it a great runner & increase its already nice gas mileage. They said to check out classicinlines(dot)com. I did, and they have some really nice stuff for most or all of the Ford straight sixes, including special aluminum heads, intake manifolds, cams, valve covers, exhaust headers, etc. They have some great stuff.
Yeah, definitely stick with the Mustang! The F-150 would kill you with mileage and everyone and their 90 year grandmother has a Jeep. If you want a 68 Mustang with a V-8, than stick it out and keep looking. Life's too short to compromise. 6 months, Craigslist, your local newspaper, ebay, swapmeets, car shows, friends with connections, this website, and I think you can find exactly what you want.
Just another vote to grab the sixxer. Seven main bearings make these inlines virtually bulletproof. I would rather have a unique inline 200 than a run of the mill 289.
Our 200 needs some waking up but I still love it!
Mustang all the way baby!
