Question 1967 Mustang Automatic Transmission Upgrade. What transmission do you recommend?

I am in the process of buying a '67 mustang, 289 with a 3 speed. I want to change the trans to either a 4 or 5 speed. What am I up against? What trans do you recommend? Top loader? T-10?

Thanks,
Fred

The T5Z 5 speed is an excelent choice for a mildly moded engine, then theres the TREMEC TKO or 3550.

The toploader 4 speed is easy to get an it is built tough, but the extra 5th gear is always a nice to have.

I would go with a T5Z or TKO.

I would go with a T-5, everone has a conversion for it now and it robs less HP than a TKO

I am kind of in the same position as you. I would like a 4 or 5 speed automatic tranny. for my '64 with a 302(more details in my sig). Any suggestions people?

Default Vote #2 for the Automatic

I too was faced with the challenge. I went with an AOD. It was a straight forward swap. There are lots of little details, and its not a difficult install. I like to just cruise and the AOD suits me fine.

Default smaller Engine and Tranny

What if I have a 200 inline 6 cyc with a 3-speed? Is it still possible to upgrade to a T5? or would it be best to go with a 4-speed.

NOTE; I just rebuild the engine and I would like to give the tranny the same service.

It is possible to do the same swap on a 200 because it will use the same bellhousing. You will just have to gear it differently for the lower HP.
