Default How to identify carburetor on 1965 Mustang

Hi folks,

how can I identify the carburetor on my Mustang 1965 coupe, V8, 289HP?
I removed the air filter and saw 4 barrels. But I have no idea what kind my Mustang has. Reason is the carburetor is leaking a little on the lower gasket. I would like to get a replacement gasket kit for my carburetor.

Thanks for any help

Alex

Your Mustang came with an Autolite 4100 4 bbl originally. However, it could have any square bore carburetor (holley, edelbrock, carter) put on over the years. The good news is they all take the same gasket so any square bore gasket should do it.

When you say leaking are you talking about a vacuum leak? If your talking about some fuel leaking out, its probably coming from the carburetor throttle shafts, not the gasket.

Hey Brite.......did the '66's come with the Autolite 4100 too? Just curious. I have a friend with a '66 fastback and can't see any stamped (or otherwise) name on it. Thanks !

Yes, the 66 also came with the 4100. They look like square boxes.

IRRC they came in two sizes. A 1.07 inch throttle opening for standard and 1.12 for the hipo. The opening size is stamped on the underside of the throttle blade. CFM is in the 400's. It is a great little carb.

Thanks for the information. I found a picture from the autolite 4100 and can conform it is one. Gas is leaking out between motor and carb. and a little bit on the acc. pump.
Do you know where I can get a gasket kit?

Well, my Mustang is org. an A-code but the former owner replaced the motor with a HiPo (271hp) K-code. It's 1.12 stamped (venturi) =600cfm. Some guy recommended to replace the autolite with an edelbrock. But I read about the autolite only good stuff. So what you guys would recommend. I mean it look like it's only leaking a little bit gas. I thought just to get a gasket kit and keep the autolite.

Thanks for any advice

Alex

Hello. The hipos used a 4100 that was manual choke, vacuum secondary and 600 cfm (the 65/66 Shelbys had a Holley ). There should be a number stamped on the base of the carb on the driver's side towards the front, near the hole that the mounting stud goes through. If you could get that number, and it is the carb for a hipo mustang and not a fairlane or falcon, then you would probably want to sell it, since you could get a brand new 600 cfm Holley or Edelbrock and have a little money left over. If that is what you have and if that is the route you choose to go, I know a couple of guys that are looking for one.

Hi again. I would not recommend replacing the 4100 for a Holley, an Edelbrock, a Demon or anything else, since the Autolite is the best one in the bunch for smooth, reliable performance and being a carb that, once it's set up right, you never have to mess with it again, unlike the Holleys, Edelbrocks, etc... What I was saying was that, if your carburetor is one that is original equipment for a K code mustang, then it is worth enough money to sell it, get a brand new carb and still have a couple of hundred bucks in your pocket, which is something that is always worth considering. I couldn't really address what the previous owner told you, but that carburetor originally came off of a 64 Galaxie 500 that had a big block 352 in it, so, with that being the case, I would keep the Autolite on the mustang. That is a really, really good carb.
