It's really the 46,513th Mustang to be produced at San Jose that year. The first "1" is only a place holder. When they produced more than 100,000 cars then it would change to a "2".
Production at each factory started at 100001 every year and didn't stop until they changed over for the next model year. You can also have three cars with the same sequential number but they would be from different plants so you're garanteed that atleast one other digit of the VIN would be different (plant code). It's also likely that they have different motors and body styles so other first characters of the VINs would be different too.
I heard Cougars were mixed in there with the sequential numbers too but I don't know for sure. May have depended on what plant. Can anyone confirm or deny that?
Back to the original question. You're best bet is to try to contact previous owners by starting with the last one. I have done this to my 68 and have personally spoken to the previous 3, I'm the 5th. I knew the name of the original all along but have failed to find her. She left old paperwork in the car with her name and it was even printed in the original owners manual. That's something else you can check too if you haven't. I found old insurance cards, registrations, emissions reports and old repair reciepts with her name on them. I saved all of these and have added mine to the paper trail for this car.
