Interesting input. I have a bunch of old stuff I'm starting to clear out and I feel a bit more informed to these tactics. Thanks all!

Default another scammer

I am in the process of advertising my 1966 K-Code, recently I was contacted by a scammer with the usual message, he would send a check for the car and shipping and all I had to do was send my check for the shipping to his "freight consultant". He went so far as to send me a bogus check written on an account from Wichita State University ! Be aware, thiefs are still out there...

I have a friend who actualy sent $10,000 to Nigeria on one of the early scams from a Princess. His money was gone in a flash and the FBI could do nothing. The old saying works! "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is." Protect yourself!!

gordie,

If I was that friend of yours, I wouldn't tell a soul about sending $10K to someone in Nigeria! I find it hard to believe anyone could fall for such a scam, but I guess "There's a sucker born every day!".

Hey RPM, Thanks for starting this thread. I'm thinking about clearing out some stuff to be able to afford new stuff for a project. It's helpful to hear about the different techniques these scammers are using to help avoid them. Thanks.

I tried selling a car online once and a guy actually sent me a check for $14k and my asking price was only $7.5k he wanted me to western union the extra back to him. Yeah OK. I played it out like I didn't know it was a scam to see how long I could keep him going. These types of scams are pathetic.

Thumbs up

The safest way will be to put you list on ebay and pay with paypal I've had any problems with paypal and I've bought more than 15 things.

I remember when I was looking for a stang I found a scam that wanted 4k he told me he was on a trip on canada and he wanted to use a escrow service i Put a fake name and he rapidly told me to change it so It was his own site.. I was really happy cuz the car looked nice We were talking for like about a month and finally I decided to investigate that corporation then I told him I wanted to use anoter company and then he never replied me.. This happen on auto trader.com

then I found another stang this time it was a black gt for 4k he told me the same god damn story.!!!! but this time it was on cars.com

Then another one again, but one day i was watching the classifieds and finally I found this stang very cheap and as is on the pics what a great deal after I tried to be scammed thanks god...

watch out for newspaper classifieds too, i've seen three so far that are scams for sure, for example:

a 1970 Chevelle complete rotisserie restoration for $4,000.

1973 Challenger same restoration, $3,000.

and a 1968 Shelby, same restoration, $3,500.

these people pushed very hard for all my information to "make the deal" each time. SO we reported them to the FBI.

It's not only this board it happens on. I'm on other boards too, not all are car related, and they are getting them too. I know someone who just tried selling a quad in a local paper by me and they got a scammer's attention. With the internet and almost everything being available online today (including the classifieds of some papers) it's only getting easier and easier for the scammers out there.

On ANY board be careful of newly registered members using Hotmail, Gmail, or another free email program answering or posting posts in the classifieds area. It's one thing if they have been around for awhile and take part in other areas of the forum but if they only stay in the classifieds and have low post numbers then you really want to be extra careful. I'm not saying all new members are bad or that you couldn't get taken by a veteran member of a board but there are certain telltale signs that are commonly used by scammers.
Ten inches, just one bottle! Kidding. I'm not a spam bot. But I do sell snake oil for your Cobra Mustangs.
