I was hoping to get some input from some folks more knowledgeble than myself on whether the car listed below is worth what is being asked.
In my short time looking for a car I have found that price and the shape a car that is that old varies greatly.... I dont mind paying for what something is worth but I dont want to get taken to the cleaners.. due to my ignorance...LOL.
Is this car worth the price they are asking? (the reserve is 28K)
Welcome to AFM! That sounds about right for a price on a low miles covert like that.
Sore

I am going to drive down and have a first hand look at it.. about 2 1/2 - 3 hour drive.... It looks very clean and I am assuming the 28K miles are orginal.. some people like to quote miles on a rebuilt engine.
I noticed on the engine that the air cleaner is not stock.. I believe the stock ones where blue and enclosed while this one is chrome... I also want to see what the underside looks like.
I like the looks of the GT convertible models but they seem harder to find and cost more... I guess I could always get the fog lights for the front from California Mustangs.....
Is that a mistake to do something like that to the car... change the grill by making it look like a GT by adding the fog lights?
28k seems like a lot to pay for an old car.... but about 5 years ago I almost bought a corvette (mid 60's model) but couldnt bring myself to do it becuase I had just sold my Mustang and couldnt see myself buying a chevy... needless to say the price of those cars have SKYROCKETED.
so maybe $28K for a low mileage, clean 66 stang is ok ???
28K for a well restored, solid, "everything works", hop-in-and-go 66 V8 convertible isn't bad, considering what they are going for, but I'd still try to talk them down at least a little as, if I've been paying enough attention to the verts, 28k is about topped out for that car if its as nice as it seems.
A chrome aircleaner and GT foglights aren't a biggie anymore, the hobby seems to be focused on nice cars Vs. correctness, and modified cars like mine can bring big dollars if done right. I watched a full mod coupe go for 24k on ebay. Granted it was near perfect and I would have given my right leg for it, but it's still a coupe going for 24k
To point out a few more things, it never mentions in the listing that its a 28k car, and it LOOKS restored, so I'd just assume that's an odometer reading. Also, your mention of looking at the underside is a MUST. Fixing structural rust on a vert can send you to the poorhouse in a hurry. For 28k it better be rock solid! Look at the torque boxes and inner rockers particularly, they are vital vert-specific pieces and susceptible to rust. Also check the cowling.

Thanks for the feedback.. I have the same mindset.. get a clean, good working car and then if I want to tinker with it thats ok as long as its done right.
On their Ebay listing it says it has 28520 miles... I will have to ask if those are orginal and if the car has had any work done.
Ok I got a chance to see the car. As you can see from the pictures the car looks great.
I could not find any rust anywhere, the car was very clean and I checked the areas suggested.. underneath, shock towers, etc. Very, very solid.
They said the car was from Texas and on the windshield their is a sticker that says Texas on it.... so that may explain it being so clean.
The engine has been rebuilt recently and it started right up, idled and ran smooth. It was 289 V8 4 barrell. The engine, hoses, belts, wires, all looked very good. I was told its the orginal motor.
All the lights, turnsignals etc work.
The Factor A/C worked and blew cold air. Tires were new.
The interior looks as good as it does in the picture pony interior, carpet, all good.
Ok to nitpick, but it isnt perfect..... they couldnt tell me exaclty how many miles where on the engine, they said was about 20,000 on rebuild the odometer reads 28k but that doesnt mean anything.
No orginal paperwork except the manual.
The boot that covers the convert top looks new but I dont think its not the orginal because it has a couple snaps on the front near the back windows with nothing to snap into.
The radio is not orginal, it has a mustang logo on it but is an am/fm cassett player.
The trunk lid, on the passenger side it sits a tiny bit low.
The passenger door, has a big of a bend outward at one spot and although its hard to see its still not just right.
This is one of the more expensive cars I have looked at but by far the best as far as the body, interior, etc... really solid car if I wanted to make it even better.
