Question 1966 Mustang Park Lights. Please tell me how they are supposed to work?

This is probably the dumbest question I've ever asked. It's been over 16 years since I last drove my coupe, so I just don't remember some of this stuff anymore. I just put new park lights on last week. When I pull the headlight switch to the 1st notch, the park lights come on. But when I pull it to the 2nd notch for the headlights, the headlights come on and the park lights go out - normal?? A friend who's something of an expert says he's 100% sure that's how they're supposed to work...but I have my doubts. Can anyone tell me for sure??

Also, the bulbs all the way around the car have been replaced (tail lights, park lights, backup lights, etc). My front park lights come on fine. My left turn signal works fine (front and rear). But when I turn my right signal on, the right rear blinks, just not the right front park light - but it DOES blink with the flashers on. We checked all the grounds - suggestions??

Thanks much!

fordgrl99,
Yup, perfectly normal!!!! Park lights go off when headlights are turned on. They then act as signal lughts only. As for the second question, I'm not an electric guru, but I do know that when you have proplems like this with 64-73 Mustangs it's USUALLY because of the turn signal switch. Not all the time, but most of the time. Unfortunately, the switch is not cheap, and replacing it is a PITA! Perhaps someone else will be able to trouble shoot your problem>.
Hope that helps.

I'm not a guru either, but at least give a try at taking the harness apart right behind the light and use one of the cheap trouble lights (with the gator clip on the other end to ground) and see if you have blinking power on it. If you don't then probably something under the dash.
As for your first question that is good to know as we are putting dad's '67 back together after it has sat for over 20 years. The park light thing most likely would have caused us to rip the harness out and start over. That is about the only thing left from the original car(he has had it since '68)

Hello. That's how the parking lights are supposed to work. Well, except for that not flashing thing, but, other than that, that's how they're supposed to work. The bulb on the parking lights is a single-filament bulb, so if it will come on at all, the problem isn't the bulb itself or the bulb's ground. Your problem is in the wire that runs from the turn signal switch to the bulb, or the turn signal switch itself. There is a connector a little ways downstream from where the turn signal switch wires come out of the steering column, kind of near the pedals, that has eight wires. The one that powers the right front turn signal should be white with a blue stripe, I'm pretty sure. You can take a volt meter and see if that wire is getting any power when you hit the turn signal. Don't unplug the connector because then the whole switch is dead. You can stick the positive probe down into the connector at the correct wire without damaging the wire. If there is no power at that wire when the turn signal is engaged, then you need to replace the turn signal switch, which isn't really that big of a deal. Hope that helps.

You all are the best! Thanks for the quick and fantastically detailed replies! If the turn signal switch is in the steering column and is what allows the turn signal to switch off after making the turn, it's been replaced! My boyfriend's gonna take a look with a tester tonight, so hopefully we'll figure it out! Again - thanks so much!

Hi again. This might help him out. It would probably be a good idea to print this and laminate it or something for future reference. Hope that helps.

Default Before you rip everything apart....

Please check/replace the turn signal flasher (just above the red arrow in the pic)
It is about $2 at Autozone or another parts house - I was ready to do the same as you - I replaced this part and it took care of my trouble.
It only has twoplugs - takes about a minute.

FYI - when you get one - go ahead an buy the two-pack - these things don't last like they used to.

How crazy and simple is this?! I just happened to be replacing the instrument bezel last night. When I hooked all the wiring back up, the turn signal now works! Apparently there was just a 'loose' wire. I love when I'm fixing something and it just happens to fix something else!! lol! Thanks so much for all the help, everyone!

Veronica - I'm definitely gonna print out that diagram, those always come in handy!
