Thumbs up Classic Mustang Advisor

I have been working on small block Ford engines since 1964 and have a wealth of information available to anyone needing questions answered. Both of my classic Mustangs have 289 engines, overbored and with 'healthy' cams, Holley carburetors, various valve train modifications, race headers and so on. All work done by myself. I have built, restored and sold over a dozen classic Mustangs over the past few decades and am currently doing a 1967 Fastback but with a 427 engine this time that is in its infant stage of restoration. The quickest way to get a reply is by emailing me at cobradon94@msn.com.

Default gas mileage

That would depend on the egine rear, trans and any modifications. My 1965 only gets 12 MPG. I can't post any pics until I re-size them. You can look at: MySpace.com - Happy Hippie - 62 - Male - Baltimore, Maryland - www.myspace.com/cobradon. Enjoy the ride!

I actually have alot of questions for you(as it relates to my work)...glad you're here.

1. How deep is the crank on a 390 block? Is it the same depth as a 427 or 428?
2. Any idea how far the crank flange hub(where the flywheel bolts up) sticks out past the bell to block mating surface on a SBF and the FE motors?

I'll have alot more, probably follow your advice and e-mail you at your address given. Thanks

Default 390/427/428 crankshaft

I've only got a little info on the big blocks but can usually find answers to some questions. The 390 and 428 can use the same balancer. They can use the same flywheel but you will need to have it balanced by a pro so he can add the weight in the right spot. You can use L2291 pistons and shave them down to work which is too much work IMHO. You can also get pistons for a 1976 390 and they will work fine but you will need a big cam to bleed off some cylinder pressure and premium gas. 390 and 428 rods are 100% identical. The 428CJ rods had bigger bolts but that was the only difference. The 427 crank is ientical to the 390 crank, 427 is just overbored. Hope this helps a little.

I may not have been clear in my post but you didn't answer my questions....let me try again.
I need to know how deep the crank is on a small block ford(for pilot bearing application) and how far out the flange is in relationship to the bellhousing mating surface on the block. In other words, when you bolt up a flywheel to the crank, what is the distance from the crank mating flange to the bellhousing mating surface on the block? I need that for info for small blocks and FE motors as well.
What I am trying to determine is stack up height for hydraulic clutch applications. WE have developed a hydraulic clutch actuator system to work in conjunction with our TKO transmissions on classic mustangs. What I am finding, is there are alot of 289ci guys as well as 390-427 and 428CJ guys out there and the stackup height is different for all of these motor scenarios. Any info you have on that would be a great help. Thanks.

Default crankshaft info

I sent what I had on hand at the time. The info should be on some detail drawings on the engines. I'll see what I can find and send it to you. Sorry about the confusion.
