Default Need advice on purchasing 1969 Mustang gt

I have owned several classic Mustangs in the past several years and just have the fever for them. I am currently in the middle of a 1970 Mustang coupe restoration project, I have rebuilt the 302 engine, and have purchased a hood, quarters, floors, fenders, tail panel, Shelby trunk lid with a fin, and several other miscellaneous pieces like interior carpet etc. this is my delima, I just found a 1969 Gt fastback for sale, it is just a shell. I would like to move what I can over the 1969 gt but the rust is really bad even the frame rails are rusted through, I am not a body guy so I dont know when the rust is too much to try and save the car, the top of the 1969 is in great shape though. I want to stop my current 1970 project, all the body shop has done so far is aligned the front fenders and hood and welded new door skins on, I asked them to stop until I have made a decision. to finish the coupe at the body shop with welding all the skins and ready to paint will cost around 5,000.00.
I know the 1969 GT car will be worth more when I am done, I just dont know if the car can be saved. I have some pics if anyone wants to see them. Thanks for any help or advice on this.

You need to stop and take a moment to really think about this. I think you are running into impulse thinking. This 69 with all of this structural rust is going to be a very expensive and problematic restoration if the structural components aren't installed correctly (components aligned and welded with quality welds). If it's not right you'll have a Mustang doglegging down the road for example.

If I'm not mistaken, less coupes were made in 69 and 70 than Sportroofs. Are you going to have to find glass for the Sportroof? Good luck, you better have a fat wallet. There are also trim items and God knows what that you will have to round up to go with the Sportroof.

The Coupe is really a good looking car and actually will draw more attention than the Sportroof because there are so few that have been restoed or restomodded, in my opinion. Follow through with the Coupe and leave the rust bucket alone. You won't be disappointed. The Sportroofs are like a**holes, everybody has one. Good luck, ---Chuck

Thanks Chuck, I have decided to finish my project, I was told by several people the GT was worth so much and the coupe was not, that had me second guessing everything I was doing. I guess everyone stops at some point and thinks about how much cash they are spending on a project, I was at that point. heck I still am, but I just need to finish what I started. I know this car will be sharp once its done.

I'm glad that you made a good decision. I have a 67 Fastback that I bought a few years ago. I've done tons of upgrades to it and I have much more that I want to do.

I know one thing for sure, people are always asking me if it's for sale and how much I would want for it, I'll never get what I have spent on it. I don't worry about the value, I bought it to have fun. All Mustangs have a fun factor to them, that's why the car was made, so people could have fun. It doesn't matter if it's a little 6 banger or a Shelby, coupe or fastback, they all share a bit of that factor.

I love the look of a coupe with some wide tires tucked under the wheel wells. I used to have a coupe, but sold it. Too much rust in the structural portion or else I would still have it.

I'm sure that you won't regret continuing with your coupe. You'll enjoy it and you will get compliments on it. I,m willing to bet that you'll hear, " You don't see many of the coupes anymore.", and they'll be saying the truth. You just don't see many of them. I am referring to the 69 and 70 model years, they just ain't around.

All of the best, ---Chuck
