Question 1968 Mustang Was There A California Special Cobra Made?

I have an opportunity to purchase a 68 mustang bearing both california special marking and cobra markings? Was there a california special cobra manufactured. I've been unable to find anything online through web searches. Anyone got any ideas or answers.

Hiya, I see this is your first post. Welcome to the site.
Yes sir, there was a 1968 California Special but I'm not so sure about the Cobra insignia. It was Shelby influenced, and had a decklid spoiler, sequential taillights, and a blacked out grille that had no Mustang identification. Wheel covers were the same used on GT models but without the GT identification. About 5000 were produced, although a smaller amount of similiar High Country Specials were sold in smaller numbers in Colorado.

Thanks welcoming me to the sight. I knew about the california model and the car I'm looking at bears all those atributes but I'm really confused about the way it is marked with insignias. I thought maybe it was wearing the cobra insignia due to the 428 but the california special insignia is out of place from all the photos that I've seen. It's a really solid and clean car that this guy is tryting to sell me but I want to be sure that this isn't a car that someone has plastered a couple of extra badges on to bump up the asking price. When all is said and done I will still probably buy the car but I want to be sure of what I'm getting. No what I mean?

no pics yet. But if the seller will let me I will take a couple tomorrow and post them to the sight to see if anyone can help with trying to figure out the misplaced insignias.

Do you mean the cobra jet badge on the engine or a shelby cobra badge on the body.Decode the door tag it will tell you the truth cobra badges are cheap and easy to stick on.There was 4118 GT/CS cars produced. To tell if it came with that 428 see if theres a r in the vin.

It's wearing the cobra badge on the body, but it does have the 428 cj engine. I know the california had the option of the 428 but they were pretty rare. The confusing thing about the car is the california specail insignia which is usually seen on the rear fender is on the area of the top behind the the window above the fender. I'll check th vin, but if I've managed to get lucky and find a 428 cj california special I may have a heart attack. The problem that I'm having is that I cannot find a single pic of the California with the 428 cj.
