Nope, at least not for the most part. It most commonly refers to the orientation of the tabs, which is a function of the orientation of the case, as most alts. can be re-clocked to different mounting arrangements by splitting the case and twisting it. IIRC the 3g is a different size case between several of the different clockings, so that's sort of a moot point.
Then you have me out in the middle of the driveway at 1am building a 65amp alternator out of a handful of parts I found on the floor in the shop so my cousin could get home in his 86 Pontiac...that was quite an education in alternators and an entirely different story, so I digress.
