Default Production date on 1965 Mustang

My son & I are i n the middle of a restoration on a 1965 Mustang. We need suspension items but some say we need the production date to determine which type we need. I have the production number 84571 and know from the VIN breakdown that the vehicle was produced in the NJ plant but have no way to figure out the production date as the warranty plates are missing. Ford is no help as they can only go back to 1967. Any ideas?

Wow, tough one to figure out. I had a similar parts issue when I had to replace the wheel cylinders on my early 1965 (production date August 4, 1964) convertible. Fortunately, my car still has its door plate. Do you know if your Mustang still has its original engine? If you're sure that it does, it's possible that you might be able to zero in on the production date somewhat by decoding the numbers on your engine block. If the motor's original (and you're lucky) it looks like you might be able to get within a few months of the actual build date of your car. At least that's what they say on the site I've linked below.

eBay Guides - Decode your 65 66 67 68 69 70 Mustang Engine Block

Good luck!

Thanks, I'll give it a try. I think the motor is original.

Hello. The production date of your car is about July 7, 1965. Maybe the 6th. You won't need that for the suspension stuff on your car, though. Hope that helps.

Awesome! Leave it to you to have the right answer Veronica! Were you able to figure this out based on the assembly plant (NJ) and production number?

Always in awe

Hi again. I was assuming that his vin is 5T0_ _ 184571 and checked that against other Metuchan built cars with vins close to that one that I know the scheduled production date of and placed it in the sequence by average production rates for the right month. Nothing to it.

I'm printing this out and filing it for future reference. Ever thought of writing a book on Mustang restoration tips?

All the best!

Hi again. That is very kind of you. There are, however, many, many books already out there on the care and feeding of ponies. The world doesn't need yet another.
