That would work if the rest of the exhaust system was so unrestricted that lack of back-pressure was a problem, which, odds are, lack of back-pressure is not a problem.

A very simple way to ballpark that would be to look at the air/fuel flow system that's on the car, from top of the carb to end of the tailpipe and figure that every 90 degrees of bend in the path reduces the hp by about 10%. From the top of the carb to the intake port is pretty much 90 degrees, from the intake port to the first bend in the exhaust manifold/header is another, and then all of the twists and turns to get to the back of the car, etc.... Different mufflers have different levels of restriction. On a 71-73 car that's basically in stock configuration as far as air/fuel flow path goes, removing restrictions would be the way to go, not creating more. Hope that helps.
