Do you mean smog equipment, such as an air pump? No Mustang was smogged till 68.

Only the '66' 6 cyl for California was smogged. I think the 289 started to be smogged in '67'. All motors were smogged across the line-up in '68'.

I think there's two different things being brought up here.

First there's the smog pump itself and then there's the closed crankcase emissions.

They were both options at first but became standard as the model years progressed.

The closed crankcase emissions was first an additional option at $5.19 in the 65 and 66 model years before becoming standard on later model years. The smog pump set up came next.

My San Jose built 289 '68 coupe has closed crankcase emissions but never had a smog pump. My car was delivered to Los Angeles (DSO 71) and sold new in Costa Mesa.

If your car has an original smog pump setup don't toss it even if you don't want it on the car. There are some concourse people paying good money for those set ups.

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.

Smog pumps came out at least as early as '66'. My 289 still has the air injector tubes in it. I was quoting from Mustang Restoration Guide, not my memory. Here are some smog parts listed from one of the top quality restoration catalogs.
