Default 1965 Mustang fastback Doors Don't Lock Or Unlock By Key or By Hand?

Hi guys (and gals),

I haven't been here for awhile but I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!

I've had this problem for awhile now but just now am getting around to diagnosing what's wrong......

The locks on both doors don't lock or unlock either by hand or with the key? The buttons won't budge either up or down.

I haven't taken the door panels off yet to check it out but plan to soon.

Has anyone else had this problem and what should I look for once the door panels are off?

Any help would be (as always) greatly appreciated.

THANKS!

Take the door panel off see if all the rods are hooked up and maybe lube them if needed.Somethings wrong or it would unlock can even be the bear claw lock its self.

More than likely the problem is exactly what Andrew is talking about. The "bear claw" lock on the latch assembly would prevent the keys from moving and unlocking/locking the door as well as manually pushing/pulling the lock rods. Sometimes age, dust, and small debris just makes thing bind up with crap. Especially if it has been in a dusty environment or around media blasting.

I would take apart the whole latch assembly and soak it in some mild cleaner/solvent (kerosene works better with less damage on components) or just PB blast the whole thing. Make dang sure you grease it well after cleaning.

My thanks to both of you for your input. It's appreciated!

I have been doing some media blasting recently but I pull the car out of the garage before I do it (that dust looks like hell on a black car!). So I know that isn't the problem. I doubt the panels have ever been removed so who knows what I might find. Maybe someone stashed a bunch of money in there and it's binding the mechanism. (I wish)

In all seriousness I'll try your suggestions then lubricate the whole mechanism and let you guys know the outcome.

Thanks again for the input!

Hello. I've found a lot of stuff like big scorpions and mummified squirrells inside the door of an old mustang. No bags of money or big diamonds, though.

Mummified squirrels? This sounds more like a CSI episode than Mustang Forum. LOL! I'll keep an eye out.....never can tell what lurks behind that panel since the car came to me from Michigan.....
