Default Help with my 1968 Fastback do's and dont's of storing a car outside

Hello All,

Just stopping in to say , I just joined AFM and I'm looking for some information to help me get my 1968 Fastback on the road again. I have been burnt a few times with work being done on it and I do not want to go down that road again. I will be storing it outside under a portable carport this winter and I wanted to ask what are the do's and dont's of storing a car outside. the car has not run in two or three years.

I also what to look this winter for someone to do the body and engine and I don't know if I should go to place that works on newer cars or someone that does body work on the side. Any help would be great!

Thanks

Hiya and welcome. Glad you joined us. You can get a good car cover, then put a tarp over top of that to make sure any snow and ice doesn't get to it. My neighbor used to do that and it would only get dusty but he had a gravel driveway. Hopefully some other members can give other ideas too.

Hi and welcome, I would get some jack stands and get those tires off the pavement take out your battery and charge it occasionally. The double wrap idea is a good one the outer tarp keeps the ice off your ride. put some gas preserver in your tank to keep out moisture. If you take off the tires wrap the hub with rags toabsorb any moisture build up I also spray them lightlt with wd 40 to keep from pitting and rusting. A good coat of wax will help to prevent any cover mishaps with the wind and snow.

What is the carport over? You may want to put a tarp down or heavy plastic before parking the car to keep moisture from coming up from the ground. Cover the exhaust pipe and air cleaner intake (snorkle) to stop vermin from finding a new home.

I just saw a little camper heater that only draws about as much amperage as a light bulb. It is a tiny heater and fan. I was thinking about keeping it in my car this winter. Let me know if that is a no no...

I wouldn't do that. I'm not sure exactly what it is but besides a possible fire keeping the inside of the car warm will just invite vermin to take up home.

If you put a cover on make sure it is tight! I used to keep a cover on my Caprice wagon when I stored it outside but I get heavy winds where I am and it would shift around and has worn the paint and the fake woodgrain in areas. I no longer use it and I just clean the car off after each storm even though I don't drive it during the winter anymore. I used extra rope to tie it on but heavy winds over time have taken thier toll on the car.
