Default what is the difference between a 1965 mustang and 1966 mustang?

Hey, just wondering what the differance is between a 65 and 66? I am (ass)uming that it is just trim? Thanks

The 66 had a slightly revised instrument panel to look less like the Falcon. The grille retained it's shape but the horse was now in a floating "corral" with a background of horizontal metal strips. The side cove received more ornate trim what many describe as a "three toothed comb". It then got front and rear seat belts, padded instrument panel, emergency flashers, and windshield washers as standard equipment.

The 65 has a honey comb grill with a "star" if you will, around the "pony corral. The 66 has a slatted grill with just the pony corral without the star.

The 65 also has the Falcon style speedometer with just fuel and temp gages. The 66 modernized the instrument cluster with round and more gages.

Ones a year older than the other...

About the only differances are minor trim variations, all major (and most minor)parts interchange.

Hey thanks guys! I was thumbing through a restore mustangs mag and I think the 65 GT350R had a different gauge cluster with a tach and a speedo in the center. Anyone know of this? Sounds like a great clean swap! - That is unless you guys can tell me where the heck I can put a tach in my 65!

Hello. A reproduction of the R model cluster is available from tony branda at R-Model Specialty Parts By the time you piece it all together, though, it won't be cheap. Another way to go would be like the 65 Shelbys that were street cars. They had a small, dash-mounted pod that had a tach and the oil pressure gauge, since they had the earlier, Falcon style instrument cluster. You could also just get the free standing dash-mounted tach like the 66 Shelbys had, or a reproduction rally pac for a Mustang. I would post some pictures of what they look like, but we are still unable to upload pictures. Hope that helps.

Hey, just wondering what this hood mount tack is. It says I could get it for a 65. Was it a factory option or something? I dont remember ever seeing one.

Hi again. The hood tachs weren't available on a mustang until the 69 model year, but, yes there was such an option. That isn't really such a good way to go, though. It gets bounced around a little more on the hood than it would on the dash or something, plus it will get rained on every so often, it has the sun beating straight down on it, etc.... They don't live as long outside as they do inside.

Hi again. That would be due to all of that getting rained on. They do look pretty cool, though.
