Default Sad day for a 1968 mustang.

I bought a 1968 t code coupe back in the spring and found out I got took. most of the underside of the car is rotting or gone. the guy selling it owned a restoration shop and covered it up purity well. it has good glass and all of the parts/wiring are there but I cant get anyone to even look at the vehicle. anyways my aunt said she would give me her firebird it needs a new interior and rebuilt engine but the body/frame are clean of rust. only problem is I have to get rid of the mustang before I can get another car. would it be a sin to scrap it?

has anyone been in this situation before? the mustang was going to be my dream car and now it seems out of reach.

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that. Sadly, even with good floors and stuff , a 68 T code coupe is the low man on the totum pole for market value. If space is not a problem you could keep the stuff that's good from the interior. If the doors don't have a bunch of rust, you could probably get something for them. If you ebayed everything on it that's worth anything you might be able to get more that way than you could by trying to sell it straight out. Hope that helps.

Default Dont scrap it

You said this was going to be your dream car. Is this your first mustang? Sometimes, they are not for the "faint at heart". Are the frame rails shot? Sometimes, people see the floor pans and say its junk. Part it out, or maybe even just save it for a later project. Dont send it to the junk yard. Remember, parts are plentiful for a mustang, you can find someone to fix it, if you do your homework. Are you worried about market value on the "totem pole"?

frame rails are shot they dident look bad but they are crumbling in sections. they dident look bad... even the floor pans have decent paint but it was just covering up rust...

while there is still a place in my heart for classic stangs i think i will wait untill im done with school and have a house of my own before i get another one.

i might snatch the glass and engine/transmission before i let it go...

Hi again. That is always a reasonable consideration. Spending 20K to get something into a condition in which it is worth 6 or 7K is seldom the best way to proceed. It is far better to just make a clean break and put that money into a better car. Snatching the driveline out of it isn't really the way to go, since the motor, tranny and rear end on your car are worth about 100 bucks all together, being 6cyl specific. The stuff that actually has some value would be solid body panels, interior items, stuff like that, and they aren't nearly as heavy or difficult to store or ship, and can be used on a V8 car. Hope that helps.

Thats why i always take a hammer and or screwdriver to the frame rail if they tired to cover it up, With something fiberglass body filler etc it gets knocked off.If i was in your shoes id strip off all useable parts sell them then crush whats left.Or find a good shell cheap and put all your parts in it.

Well, I hate to scrap cars but in reality you can't save them all.

I scrapped a 1968 Mustang coupe too that I bought as a parts car. It was a T code too that had been left in a field for 11 years and sunk in the ground to it's axles/floor. The bottom 3-4" was heavily rotted away and it split in half with only the A pillars and roof holding the halves together. This had been a Northeast car it's whole life too and was discarded in the field in 91 or 92 because of it's poor condition at that time. Cars aren't cheese and they don't get better with time!

Do I feel bad scrapping it? No, not really. While with the repro parts on the market it *could* have had both halves put on a jig and then reconstruct the car but it was beyond my skills and wallet to even consider resurrecting this car. Nothing special or rare about a Lime Gold/black interior 6cyl coupe with a vinyl roof and AM radio as it's only options (I did pull a Marti report on it for curiousity).

I picked that car clean over a 2 day period and filled my Chevy wagon with parts that were still good or salvagable. Took most of the glass, wiring harnesses, trim, trunk lid, hood, dash parts, heater box, tail lights and all the odds and ends that nickle and dime you like screws and clips. The seats stayed since the mice and other critters had gotten to them. The wheels and suspension stayed too. I had no interest in 6 cyl parts plus I had to leave some parts on it so I could get rid of the carcuss for free. Plus I didn't want to lay in the mud trying to fight the dirt and rust while worrying about the car collapsing on me trying to salvage the C4 or anything else under there! The doors were rusted bad and they stayed too plus the front fenders and grille were completely destroyed since the car was pushed into the field with a backhoe originally. The horns weren't damaged and I took them too.

Well, that's a bit of a story but hopefully it will make you feel better and realize with what I had mentioned before that some cars just shouldn't or can't be saved and don't worry about it. My parts car helped me with my other 68 and a 67 of a friend who needed some parts for her car.

Trying to find my father's 1973 Mustang Grande he bought brand new. 3F04F126773 last known registration and title was in New Jersey, 1982.
